I am experiencing conflict between registrars and whois when checking expiries, etc.

Could someone please tell me where to go to get the ACCURATE information on the TRUE status and expiry of a domain? Where do I get the FINAL word?

Thanks for any help.

Please give a specific example of a conflict. (Keep in mind that for expired domain names in the 45 day period following expiration, the registry expiration year and the registrar expiration year may differ, but both are technically correct.) I have seen other conflicting whois information, but not nearly so often.

dnacode.com is also a bit funky: whois.net says it's available, but the reg says it's secure 'till 2009

Zircons.com - both registry and registrar agree expiration date is 24-Jan-2004. It is not on registrar hold - but since there are no name servers configured, it is not in the zone file (just like domain names which are on registrar hold)

Thanks; but my question is more where do I get the info to check with confidence than specifically about these domains.

Like where did you check?

dnacode.com - both registry and registrar agree expiration date is 02-Oct-2009. It is not on registrar hold - but since there are no name servers configured, it is not in the zone file (just like domain names which are on registrar hold)

I check the registry whois first (whois.crsnic.net or whois.internic.net or go to www.internic.net). It is authoritative, although it is not updated in real time, so it may be a few hours out of date.

The registry whois will tell you which registrar is the registrar of record. Go there for contact information, etc.

Some registrar and third-party whois services attempt to do the two-step process automatically, which is nice when it works. But many times popular sites get blocked from the registrar whois servers and give errors.

If you are in doubt about what information is correct, you can do the lookups yourself and be sure the results are right.
