...patience and a couple of "friends" at ICANN.

I think there are efforts to streamline the process, why don't you check their website.

#3, #4, #5 are correct.

Political clout, chumming up with the ICANN folks, and mucho dinero.

Lots of smiling, hand shaking, patting on the backs, dinners, ski trips, cruises.

Or buy an island, call it a country, then apply.

To find out the full and boring details, go to their site. It looks like they are trying to make it easier and decreased the fees. I guess they want to hurry up and complete their headquarters moving to Switzerland before the lawsuits pile up.

there's a certain irony to this - ICANN is joining alleged cybersquatters in their efforts to escape US courts :)

Exactly. RegistryFly for one...I have no idea how many pending actions and filings and lawsuits are being prepared and submitted. ICANN clearly knew of these improprieties for almost 2 years leading up to the collapse.

Kind of like Haliburton raping the US taxpayers of Billions of $$$ and being awarded no bid contracts only to announce they are moving their world headquarters to Dubai.
