I have hundreds of domains and the number growing.

I think I have to limit my number of domains as they are liablity to manage including renewal fees.

What do you think?

What is the most comfortable amount of domains to manage?

Really you are collecting 10000+ in 2009?

How will you manage? You might have to use special software to manage that much.

I have a hard time managing 100 domains..bah and when you buy domains, you always have to get an account with some other registrar because they aren't using the same as yours, plus if you get dropped domaisn you have to use their registrar for a few months before you can travel. So much crap to remember. i know I have domains I totally forgot about, but won't realize again until I get the renewal notice.

i think the most comfortable amount is equal to your profit margins.

when you are making enough revenue to support renewal fee's for your portfolio, without selling a domain...then "quantity" is not a negative.

most domainers may consider reducing quantity, when revenues are not supporting the cast or you have to start selling domains to maintain cash flow.

another scenerio is the uncertainty of future increases in renewal fee's which make it difficult to forecast profitability down the road.

domains are easier to manage when they are all with

one registrar, but who wants all their "eggs in one basket".
even with security and service, there is always an element of "what if".

when all the "top tier" names are held at one registrar, then they can become a target.

all that said, i'm still buying and selling, while trying to reduce some names that are not producing.

i strive to have an efficient portfolio of domains that not only sustain themselves, but provide additional income to be financially free!

imo...

One of the major reasons (but not the only reason) I am in the process of drastically trimming my portfolio from a high water mark a year ago of 3,500 down to the 2,000 level is the extensive time spent on maintanance, so my answer to managable size is no more than roughly 2,000 in my experience.

Hard to say but if your domains/websites make way more than renewal fees, it's probably easier to manage no matter what the number.

November was a tough month for me because I had a lot of renewals that month and lower cash flow. Other months have been more manageable.

The less registrars you use the better, Most of my domains are at two registrars, and I also use two other registrars but for a low number of names. I look after <1000 domains and don't really have any problems other than what I mentioned above, and also finding time to get each one developped, at least minimally.

Nearly 10k and growing slowly.

The portfolio is profitable overall (PPC and sales combined), so cash flow isn't a problem at the moment.

Management is a bit of a problem, mainly from the point of view of time.

The most awkward and tiresome part is probably at renewal time deciding whether to drop not very good names or renew them.

After that it is handling sales enquiries - more domains, more enquiries and sales to handle.

Another problem that can increase with size of portfolio is an increase in C&Ds or WIPO threats. Just received one for a "generic" acronym something like "ocas.net".

I don't use any management software for the complete portfolio. I have a spreadsheet with purchase date and price and registrar/auction house for about 90% of the names.

Otherwise I mainly rely on lists from my registrar accounts and renewal notices.

I just discovered today that I lost a snapnames domain that doesn't seem to have been in my manage.snapnames.com account and I was never sent the renewal notice by the registrar - annoying. (This only seems to happen with a few of my snapnames acquisitions, fortunately).

I only found out because I received a "you have won xxxxxxxx.com" notice and I couldn't remember backordering it recently. US$60 renewal fee LOL.

I'm using Watch My Domains Pro just now to check up on my snapnames wins over the past 2 years to try to avoid this happening again.

I should probably use WMD methodically to regularly check all my domains for security, but won't help much with renewal decisions and sales enquiries which take up the most time.

I am working towards consolidating with two registrars, moving names out of snapnames and pool registrars and dotster before renewal. Acquiring more domains at pool and snapnames doesn't help!!

Pretty easy for me to manage about 400, have not lost any to date and renew them one at a time by hand. I am part time into this, although at times it seems full time.. lol

Between my partner and myself, we have about 2500 domains. Our account exec at GoDaddy sends me a list every month of the domains coming up for renewal the following month, and I double check them, tell them which ones to drop and give him the card details to bill the rest. He applies our discounts and takes care of it for us.

I keep a detailed spreadsheet in Excel and regularly export lists from GD to import and do a side by side comparison to make sure nothing is out of the ordinary.

The place where I run into management trouble isn't in domain quantity, but in registrar quantity. I have hundreds of domains spread out all over God's green earth thanks to SnapNames, and it's almost unbearable to keep track of things at times.

Exactly - doing a spreadsheet for one registrar is easy, doing the same for 8-10 different registrars is a pain.
