I don't think the $10 or $15 transfer fees have anything to do with the expenses of transferring domains. It is more a way of making sure you don't get stuck selling your domain for $1 and having to honor it.

The whole practice stinks in my opinion, and I would love to see ebay shut it down. If you don't want to sell your domain for less than $10, then simply start the bidding at $10.

Anyway, in my experience, ebay is not a very lucrative experience for domain sellers. I wish you the best of luck.

What sells on ebay.....

just about anything but domain names. I used it for up to about 9 months ago, but the listing fees eat you alive. I think most people buying on ebay are not end users, but wholsalers looking for underpriced names or bargains.

I did find I had better luck listing domains on ebay in the non-domain areas. For example selling photo related domain in the photography area, or book related names in the books categories, since that's where the end users tend to be browsing.

EBay is also good when you have more than one buyer interested in the same domain name.

Ebay is good for low priced domains. I had a couple on last week and made close to $200 with the $1 start and then $15 transfer fee.

Anything bid starting over $9.95 or $9.99 is an add'l listing fee that is why most domain sellers start it at $1.00.

We are not attempting to get over on the buyer just Ebay! They're fees are too high! If I pay $8.88 to register a domain and get a min. of $16 for it ($1+$15 transfer fee) that is only a couple of dollars and EBay only gets $0.30 (listing fee) plus a very small fraction of the $1 final value fee.

So you can judge for yourself. Just test the waters. But Ebay is truely not the place for domain selling - only to get rid of domains that may cost you more in renewing after you have attempted to sell in other venues.

P. S. You could also use it to draw attention to your domain name also. I have done it and have sold a few off Ebay!

Ebay is a meat market. When you can see people selling 10 dollar gift cards to a restaraunt to try and make a profit I fell something is wrong. If you interested in selling domains get with one of the members from this forum that has a site dedicated to selling domains and post you list with them. That is just my thoughts!

hey everyone

I have been selling on eBay for 3 years now, I’ve been very successful with many things like collectables,(hotwheels etc.) eBooks - and so on. I found that Domains are a different breed all together, sometimes they do well and sometimes not, its all about who is looking at the ads at that time.
adoptabledomains you are dead on about focusing your market
I’ve done ok with a few of my names.
Generally there are two types of dn sellers:
1) Moderate - high value dn sellers
2) High-volume-I-just-registered-this-please-buy-it sellers.

1) Moderate - high value dn sellers:

These sales sometimes do really well, sometimes a domain sells on hype alone there has been HUGE sales of Mercedes Benz related dn but that’s more of a fad then anything - temporary high value domains, and if you can get it right you can really clean up ;)

2) High-volume-I-just-registered-this-please-buy-it sellers:

There are many people who are mass selling domains, which usually includes a $15 transfer fee. (This is to protect them from loss of profits)
and making decent profits because they are making a few dollars on most names (remember this is high volume) and they get the odd sale of $200 - $500 which can make for decent profits. if they only paid reg fees.

Just like fmmp said, when an eBay auction is started after 9.95 it goes from a .30 cents to .55 cents listing fee, that takes a big cut when you are selling high volume. Also People usually don't want to look at an auction that doesn't start relatively low (general rule is 10% of value) so usually the by nature of an auction sellers are forced to put their domains low.
Also there are other fees associated with eBay such as end eBay fees (up to $25 is 5.25%) paypal fees hurt the seller too. if a seller in this case lost a few auctions say losing $10 (reg fee)
That would severely take his profits down on the bad domains that they sell.

I personally don't like the $10 15$ transfer but it does offer the seller some protection. Basically if someone is willing to pay it, I guess it is ok.

Its unreal how many people feel that the transfer fee is a standard thing- granted, with some registers there could be a charge. EBayers are happy to pay it.

The real money I’ve seen on eBay is in selling developed domains
There is a CRAZY market for turnkey businesses with good domain names.
There are a lot of people who want to own their own businesses but either doesn’t know where to start or they don't have the time for it.
It is kind of nice because these people also usually have money to invest in it.
Popular websites command a high premium

Here’s a prime example one of my auctions
Fast-Autos.com which get 1000 unique ips a day is doing very very well. J
so there is a market for creative domain builders out there :)

No problem :)

It’s actually funny, there were so many people selling the same rehashed template websites (search engine – viagra – travel sites) with just any relevant domain name and they were making very good money.

Actually I was guilty of that once

My-ebook-business.com was a pre-made website from dotcombuilder.com

I sold the site for 60 some dollars. Not too bad for 8.88 cost of the domain. The person I sold it to turned into a very good friend and business contact. so there are added benefits to selling on eBay other then making money :)

Keep that in mind when you are selling domains, or anything for that matter. and always be as professional as possible :)

It's all about the money! Ebay or not, it does not matter! If you are making a profit selling names on Ebay then good for you. Why change a strategy when it works? It's all about making those sales at the end of the day.

Thanks!

just to respond to one of the earlier comments on this thread, using ebay to advertise a good name can be worth the while. I had two names of decent quality that I listed for 1$ with a high rerserve. Within 24 hours, I had people emailing me offering to buy the name straight off if I took it off of auction, which I was more than happy to do because it gets you out of closing costs.

The other benefit is that you can set a high reserve if you want to get a rough idea of what people would actually pay for the name.

While I have had hit and miss on ebay using most of the tactics mentioned in this list, the biggest asset is finding repeat buyers you can email when you want to sell a name. So even if you take a couple of losses up front, it can still pay off in the long run because everytime you sell a name, you are telling that customer that you are trustworthy, you do quick transfers, etc.

but that's just my .01$
