Maybe the owner cancelled the reg. That's my guess.

I think that's the registrar policy. I saw many of this with redemption peroid domains. The registrar increases the exp. date couple of months (up to one year) of the domain name in case the old owner decided to get the name back. In that case, they charge the customer between $150 - $250 and restore the domain name for him/her.
