Have you ever visited an online store or bought a product then go to a different site, only to see banner ads for the same exact product?

I started to notice this type of marketing recently on some major websites.

This is a very smart method of advertising, offering people the exact product they have been seeking.

I didn't know this type of marketing was possible.

It's called "cookies" and they're shared across various web sites, not just the originating one, as long as these web sites are affiliated.

I am aware that they are using 'cookies'. Also they are probably using the same advertising network. That still doesn't answer my question.

There isn't any type of specific marketing involved, other than the assumption that if you've bought Product X, then you're likely to be interested in Product X again.
It's the idea of a "repeat customer"... there's no marketing buzzword like "viral" or "guerrilla" behind it.

But, if you like, you can call it "memetic", as in a persistent idea that is found across multiple intellectual spaces simultaneously.
