I am curious how much you'd pay "in today's economy" (LOL - Raider) :D for a LLL .net

Not how much you'd value the letters etc. but how much you'd be willing to spend, to invest, to cough up :) There's a difference there so be objective please.

Remember the old domain mantra, "buy cheap now, sell high later" ;)

Paying low $x,xxx for really good letters is good business imo, future is bright for all short top level names due to their rarity and popularity with businesses, not to mention traffic.

Thanks Chris. So the most you'd spend on any LLL .net now would be ...?

Great. So you're a domainer with brains, not a speculator that views a range of domains as simple letter permutations :D

Let's hear some more opinions - how much cash would you spend for a LLL.net domain during the first quarter of 2009.

for me to go 4 or even 5 figures, the name would have to be a monster.

Hehe, don't we all - however I am not talking about bulk buying out of habit but rather, a single purchase for the max price you'd pay.

OK.

It's all about value & risk. Let me explain:

If an LLL .net has a $4k price tag but the potential to resell it at ten times as much, would you buy it? Would you take that risk?

the most i would spend on a single LLL.net would be in the low $,$$$

Thanks Don.

Another factor I'd like to throw in is that like with the stock market, your position depends on the current trend and you tend to sell once the price hits a certain level if the stock falls; however, as the stock climbs you reposition and buy at a higher price. So, for example, just because LLL .com's are not in the $xxx region anymore doesn't mean you should not buy at the current levels.

Back to the LLL .net

Think from an end-user buyer's perspective, that of a non-domainer, that'd be willing to pay ten times the price you bought an exceptional LLL .net for. Step aside from the mindset of the domainer who buys just to flip at any profit. Domains are investments and some are for the long term.

For LLL.nets with "fantastic" letters (e.g. ACI, CBO, PTS etc.) I would spend up to $1,4k-$1,5k. For English dictionary LLL.nets the price would of course be much, much higher. I see no direct reason why .net domains have dropped so much in value over the last few months (other than the "obvious" recession etc.), but I believe in a strong comeback and holders of LLL.nets should sit on them and not sell just yet.

I'm not saying this to boost LLL.nets, I don't own a single one of them.

These are key points that I stress and use.

The letters IDN, PHP, DNS, DOS, mean so much to domainers and techheads.

What do they mean to my wife?

Nada.

But say FLY, BRA, TRY, BUY and all have a meaning.

And yes, those are genercis.

I would buy a good generic dot net for up to xxx,xxx.xx.

If FLY.com is a $1.3 million domain then FLY.net is $130K, roughly 10% of the value.

That is THE MAX I would consider paying.

Naturally the cheaper the better.

No matter what, if I buy a domain name I consider myself the end user.

And I am a consumer.

And that is the market we all want to sell to.

If I think a dot com is worth X amount, then the dot net is about 1/10.

That is my formula.

Stian, I must have bought your last LLL .net then :D

Over the course of several years I must have bought and sold about 100 LLL .net domains in the aftermarket; none were hand-registered. My big break came 4 years ago when I turned a $500 purchase into a 5 figure sale. With the onslaught of IDN, .mobi/.asia/.tel junk, there is a lot of white noise but the truth remains that before .com became the king of commercial Internet, the much-coveted domains were .net; even IBM.net was in primary use instead of the .com

It's about opportunities and whether you're willing to take an investment risk.

There are a few becoming available at this level. Even some right now on DNF for under $400. They are not being "snapped up" I suspect because everybody is so cautious right now.

As usual, Acro sums it up nicely. It's all about risk. Each domain investment comes with an associated level of risk. What you buy will depend on your own strategy and risk acceptance level. Some are buying up cheaper names, other are saving up for more expensive names with different risk profiles.

All in all, there is still tremendous opportunity in the industry...if you're smart.

I have made a 3k offer on a lll.net last month...although more so for development purposes...not speculation/resale - although the purpose may be changed if I were to get a quick 10x+ offer.... my 3k offer was not accepted though.

Speculation wise - I think I would pay mid xxxx for the right lll.net and maybe higher if it was a geo like nyc or a generic word....but it would have to be a great deal (in my mind).

I'm not really sure since I am new to buying lll.nets but I can tell you I have caught some great deals on them. I have purchased 4 lll.nets for under 1700.

Currently, I'm moving to dictionary from LLL.nets
Maybe im superstitious, but commercial dictionary one worders seem to be a more safer ground atm.
And yeah, LLLnets havent fallen down in value drastically, you can still get a decent price relative to the quality.
