What's up with the high number of recent domain registrations?

I was just looking at the domain registration numbers on http://www.deleteddomains.com and at http://www.whois.sc.

The number of domains that are being registered is staggering. Over 30,000 .com domains registered in 24 hours - amazing. Is there going to be another dot com boom for domain sales like in the late 90's? Is there another reason that people are registering these domains besides for sales purposes or development?

What's even more amazing to me is to look at http://www.deleteddomains.com and see the "new registrations" that have been picked up in the last 24 hours.

Some of the .coms, .nets, .orgs that people are registering are awful (at least in my opinion) and I don't understand how the registrants think that they'll be able to sell bad domains.

If there's going to be another internet boom - then I'm all for it. I own quite a few choice domains myself. Even now, domain sales can be quite lucrative depending on the name and the buyer's budget.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else is amazed at the number of registrations that are currently being carried out.

Peace out,

Just another batch of wannabe name speculators buying before they learn the business.

Don't forget to take away all the names on this list which were renewed rather than just registered (e.g. keo.com)

I think rubbish hosting and relay servers are contributing. I've reg'd a few .nets and hyphens to provide backup sites to the .coms.

Since drops have dried up for now, perhaps folks are looking for decent unregged names instead of ransacking the drop list.
