Hi

Just curious and asking as a fellow member!

what's your opinion on sellers saying this name is a typo, but the name either gets "no traffic" or they "don't have any stats" or they state assume "no traffic".

question:

is a domain a typo, if there is no traffic?

or is it just a misspelled word?

would you consider it misleading, to state it as a typo, when the seller knows there is no traffic?

I think of a misspelled word as being something like 'certifide'.

A typo is still a typo no matter how much traffic it gets, it's just ones without (or with very little) traffic are worthless.

I don't think it's misleading.

Typo/mispell is the samething (to me).

A typo is a typo.

Some are worthless with no traffic, some are not as worthless as they could still be 'brandable' imo.

A domain is a typo if it is a mispell of a word or a site.

No, but I would be very suspect of why they don't want to keep it.
If they are selling it for a low price, then it most likely gets no traffic.
If they are selling it for a mid/high price, then they should be able to provide stats because without traffic a typo has little to no value.
If they say that they haven't even monitored the traffic, then you can bet that they don't think it gets any or they know it does'nt get any.

Hi

Thanks for the responses!

I guess my real question is...

How can a domain be a typo, if no one ever types it?

I agree with the notion that typos without traffic are somewhat useless, unless they are brandable...

I use elivate as the name of my web business, it can be considered a typo of elevate I suppose, but if I was counting on parking revenue from the people who were looking for elevate I would be very disappointed... But, I like the name and I think it is brandable so it has value to me...

But you can assume that it has no traffic and there are no stats

A typo is a typo whether it gets traffic or not. Some are more common than others.

A typo is definitely different to a misspelling though:

e.g.
nusic is a typo of music

and musik is a spelling mistake

Your absolutely right, my post was meant to read:

A typo is a typo no matter how minimal the traffic is, but some get more than others

It doesn't matter to me. A domain is a domain. How the person tries to sell it is what may or may not be considered fraud.

Have you seen the latest "Web 2.0" sites. Most are typos and are getting tons of traffic.

and musik is a spelling mistake

Actually depending on what language you speak musik is a real word.

In general yes, unless the market is cash heavy. In that case very light traffic can = some nice coin. :)

Think of the last time you went to your browser search bar and mistakenly entered the wrong URL. Where did you end up? On a error page or parked page?

I have typos that are some of my biggest revenue generators and some not.

If you mistakenly put in the wrong word, it is a typo in the simplest sense. If you are drafting a letter and misspelled a word, that is a typo.

It gets back to the notion that some typo's, as a domain name, do much better than others purely based on the traffic and how many other idiots...oops, I meant customers...put in the same goof.

Yes, but considering the literacy level of our country. A big company such as Yahoo buying a typo such as "Flickr.com" knowingly gave Flicker.com tons of traffic. Why they didn't secure both names is beyond me.

This can be said about countless other web 2.0 sites that are purposely misspelling their names because it's the "hip" thing to do when what they are doing is feeding domainers TONS of traffic, making their domains much much more valuable.

if these 2.0 sites are "making-up" words, based on a correct version of the word, then they IMO they should not be considered typos, as they are the real thing.

also an actual site is much different than a typo of a site or a typo of a correctly spelled word.

an example of my thoughts are...

webiste.net < it's a misspelling of website and also a typo imo, because it gets some hits

just trying to see what others think about the subject.
