If I have domains near to expire, how many days prior to the expiration date is Moniker supposed to auto-renew the domains ?

Typically domains in your account are registered 30 days prior to expiration if the domain is set to 'auto renew' in your account.

Recently, Moniker had a system error where it renewed several domains (40 to be exact) in my account 'more than' 60 days before their expiration. They actually renewed domains that were not due to expire until late February.

I can only hope to work this out with Moniker. I hope the site doesn't automatically renew all of the domains in my account or there won't be anything under the Christmas tree this year :-(

Did this happen to anyone else???

Yes, that happened to every body.
Sadly, they just said sorry, but we can't rollback the renewals.

With this new process and policy change Moniker can essentially renew a domain anytime they please just because a domain is set on auto-renew. Why not 90 or 120 days from expiration?

I guess they could renew my entire portfolio anytime since I leave all of my domains on auto-renew?

It was not a "policy change". According to them, it was mistake, a script that had to be run for certain ccTLD and ended affecting all the TLDs.
Anyway, that does not make me happier.

Wow, and I thought Enom's BulkRegister folks were having problems ... sounds like Moniker is even more problematic :(

Moniker should be able to credit back the unexpected renewals somehow for those who desire that...

Either via the registries ... or more realistically, internally by issuing credits / refunds and deferring the billing for those renewals to the appropriate time; most will renew so the exposure to Moniker should be mimimal.

Moniker still can't register IDNs ... that has long made me wonder whether the tech folks at Moniker are up to the task ... this latest snafu tends to reaffirm my concerns.

Moniker has great pricing for sure, but what good is that, if the reliability isn't there.

Hopefully someone from Moniker can chime in - perhaps many folks in this thread are mistaken regarding the situation ... I hope that's the case.

IDN registration is launching this coming week. We have been managing IDN's since they existed but the new Language tags will be implemented on Tuesday.

Regarding the auto-renew, some companies auto renew 60 days out, we do it around 14 days from expiration. Yes we did have a system glitch that caught names in about 400 accounts out of 15K and renewed domains already set for auto-renew early. All accounts were not affected. Our error was not that we ran auto-renew on names that were not supposed to be renewed...it just renewed some of them early. We have apologized up and down for this error and can make arrangements to credit you back now and bill you in January for those if there is an issue with funding. It is not a policy that we just renew names when ever we want...it was a mistake...but names were not deleted and names were renewed that were tagged to be renewed. Renewals are NOT reversible by the registry and the names that renewed were supposed to renew…if we renewed domains not tagged for auto-renew, we would be issuing credits back and resolving this in another way.

I would not categorize us as being unreliable as we rarely have errors with our systems or process but it can and does happen from time to time to all companies….

If you have any further concerns, please email me and I will make sure that they are addressed.

I eventually plan to move most of my IDNs to moniker. However I have always left the language tag my Japanese/Chinese names with the default language tag "AFRIKAANS". Is this tag used by you in any way? Does it really matter what tag is selected? So far it seems that it doesn't have a difference. What is the long term plan over these "language" tags.

we show the language tag at the point of registration. The domains will show up in the language they are in your account. You can mouse over the domain and see the punicode

Am I in trouble if I selected AFRIKAANS(default) for all my domains? I didn't decipher between each language by selecting the appropriate language tags.
