I've been using JustDropped.com to surf the expiring domains list but started to wonder about an alternative that would speed things up and give me a bit more flexibility. I came across a link to wsmdomains.com/ExpiredDomains recently - I think it was from a post by Carter - and I've been downloading the lists and running scripts against them from my Mac. Works quite nicely, but I started to wonder where to the dropping name lists come from. Be nice to get info straight from the source.

Anybody know where folks like justdropped and wsmdomains get the list of expiring domains from?

I think they create the list scanning domains every day...

If you have access to the raw zone files you can compare them with the previous release and see which names are added/removed. I'm simplifying but you get the idea.

What about services where for free or for a fee we can get a weekly/daily email with dropping names? - saving time, but of course - increasing competition..

Kate's on the money. Get the zone files and cross reference them.

So, how does one get access to the zone files?

I think data comes out of main registry.

Yeah, I always thought that the data was provided by Verizon for public access (at least for the TLDs that they mange directly. Am I wrong?

I download expiring domain lists from places such as pool.com and snapnames.com etc. I use an access database and various wordlists and sql queries to compare them against each other. I check the results are free on godaddy build register or similar.

If you want to check how that goes for me then look at my blog www.dndizzy.com where i post the results free for anyone to register. Not sure the results are any good mind you ;). The wordlists I use will be uploaded for anyone to download soon also so you can create your own tools. Redtruck: Let me know what you think?

Nice blog Spammy. Yes, that's sort of what I had planned, only for my own personal use, and using UNIX scripts under Mac OS instead of Access and SQL (too bloody complicated!).

I was just looking around for a Verison site that might have publicly accessible information on domains registered, but couldn't find anything. Anyone got any clues?
