Drop lists? Nope.
DRT? Nope.
Scanning? Nope.

Emails like this:

Hello,

We noticed you own the domain (domain). (org, net, com). We have a great opportunity for you to purchase (domain). (org, net, com). If you are interested, please click on the link below to begin your purchase.

We've all seen them, they come in different shapes or sizes and the first thing I do is check to see if it is available for registration (most of the time it is, or will be within 24 hours) and if it is, I'll register it (if I want it, that is).

I guess their primary customer is the inexperienced domainer or end user who doesn't know any better? Usually their price is anywhere from $100 (lowest I've ever seen) to $750 (averaging between $250-$500). The really sad part is that is the price PER YEAR. It looks to me like some of these companies hold onto the domain and lease it to you, you never really own it.

The funny thing is that I'll usually get 2-3 emails minimum for the same domain - odd how multiple companies can sell the name. ;) The worst is that once a company was trying to sell a domain to me that I already owned!

that could've been funny. If you expressed interested in it and they'd contacted you as the domain owner to negotiate purchase you might have ended up negotiating with yourself via a broker :D
