History: Former domainer/online entrepreneur here. Got out for a while. Liquidated most of my inventory. That was 4-5 years ago.

Now I am back in a place where I have to figure out what to do with my life. I know I was happiest when I was doing my own thing with my online business (I had 1 employee, almost total freedom, made decent money). Without going into detail, I can't really go back into what I did before.

So now, I have to figure out what to do when I grow up. I am 40 with a big mortgage and 2 small kids, so big risks are out of the question.

Where is the real money being made online these days?

1. Sell your 2002 names at 2008 prices

2. What is your budget for domain investing and what are your area of expertise: PPC, Develop websites, End user contacts, etc...

There are 1001 ways to make money in this business so you need to tell us how much you can risk and what area of domaining that you are comfortable to move forward.

I'm not necessarily looking at domaining per se, though I certainly don't rule it out.

My level of expertise is unfortunately stuck at 2003/2004 levels in most areas, and relatively broad but not very detailed in any one area. I can tell you that I dabbled in all of the areas you mentioned, but didn't really break out in any of them.

The business I built was a hybrid between online marketing and offline marketing. Bridging the gap for my niche, so to speak.

I'm moving into niche interest sites with usergen content.

First site is to be in a niche that my daughter is involved with, lots of her firends are into it too so I'm hoping they kick-start the content. Next site will be a sporting niche that I was involved with for many years and still know all the top names in.

Once up and running, I'll buy up related names, either for traffic or resale. I figure I should be able to get a good number of interested end users this way.

Development in either geo's/generics/niche - these are where I am heading. But domain marketing to specific end users is an area I hope to develop more into - there are an awlful lot of businesses out there that have yet to cotton on to the importance of a good domain name and website.

Just my 2 cents.

Anyway, welcome back to the best business in the world.

Where is the real money being made in domains these days?

In BUYING domains.

Many investors will tell you that they make their money when they BUY their investments.

Now is the time to shop around and buy high quality domains.

That may sound self serving coming from a domain buyer broker but you will be amazed at the deals that are out there if you shop around... just like in real estate.

Buy low. Sell high.

Which do you think is easier right now?

I'll agree with these, generics and develop.

There are some great books out there to help you get up to date with web development. If you need books, the Visual Quickstart Guides (by Peachpit press) are excellent - I have a lot of the current series. They're great for either a read-though textbook or a reference guide (and they're not too expensive, most under $25 only one or two over $40.

You can also take a college course.

Invest in my business with a stake. I made $120,000 in sales in 12 months. I came way late in the game so I did not have any 1 word, LLL or other portfolio advantages.

With 5-10 buy solicitations a month, I know, I am doing well to own the 5000 plus names I have acquired.

You might want to get into domain dropcatching. This is a great way to acquire some quality domains for your portfolio. I can offer some advice if needed.

HI

Depending on the skill level you have to start make rich content sites with adsense and affiliate links make like 50 or site submit them to directories and submit the content (articles) to article directories... then when you have completed this for each of the 50 sites you could be making around $40-80$ per day on adsense plus income from the affiliate sales..

Spend that money to buy better domains to build a really money making site on...

Thx
Tom
