Say Asia-based registrar existing for the sole purpose of catching drops gets a drop which goes for the $10,000 bid at his partner drop auction.

Where do those $10,000 collected exactly go after that? How is the loot shared? Who gets paid, when and how much?

I think the general split is 50%-50%, but of course it ranges.

It completely depends on who they're partnering with (Pool, eNom, Snap, etc.). Each company negotiates their own deals.

So in theory, and that is just in theory, a large typosquatter like LaPorte Holdings can decide to get rid of some of his names by letting them "drop" knowing that they will fetch more money that way (one domainer on this board recently spent 100k for some of LaPorte's drops), not too mention it's much easier to get rid of questionable domains that way rather than trying to shop them around especially in this current TM fear obsessed domain culture?

In other words was LaPorte's recent drop really a "drop", or was it a convenient and cunning public sale disguised as drop?

Hmmmm...

No, they would be dropped.

The previous owner of a domain receives absolutely no gain from the auction revenue of a dropped name.

Unless he is a big player and makes prior arrangements first?

Or unless it's through a direct transfer arrangement like NetSol and SnapNames.

The Laporte drops has been catched partially by all major drop-catchers, so they would needto have some agreement with all of them...
