Just done a quick try at researching the origin, to little avail.

It undoubtedly seems poker related as the anti to enter a game and is recognised as the same as 'two penny worth' in English (2 cents now is more commonly said in the UK). As to first usage I can find no information in the few minutes I spent looking.

It was a bright sunny sunday morning and a a group of friends were having a picnic near a lake in Utah, there broke out a argument between two of the friends and they were almost about to fight with each other when the other friends decided to bet on the outcome of the result..so one of the guys involved in the fight ran away.

ohh err that was my 2 cents :D

Put my two cents in

Meaning: To state one's opinion.
Example: If I can put my two cents in, maintenance on that Ferrari will kill you.
Origin: "Put my two cents in" originates from the older "put my two bits in" and has its origin in the game of poker. When playing poker you have to make a small bet before the cards are dealt called an "ante" to begin play in that hand.
This phrase draws an analogy to the poker ante (two bits) and gains your entry into the conversation.

Thanks to Evelyn and Dawn Rambin and Ron Akers

Two bits means one quarter (currently the American twenty five cent piece). This comes from the older term "piece of eight".

Today we have coins minted in different denominations - nickel, dime, and quarter in the U.S. - but this was not always so. Gold and silver coins once served as currency, with the value of the coin equal to the value of the gold or silver contained in the coin. To obtain currency valued at less than a full gold coin, coins would be scored and split into pieces. This is how one would make change so to speak.

Coins could be split into halfs, quarters, and eighths. One eighth of a coin was called a "piece of eight" and also called a "bit". Two pieces of eight is equal to one quarter. Hence "two bits" is a quarter.

Thanks to William M. Gatesman and Michael Welzien

Hence "Smashed to bits" literally means to break something into eighths.

Nope...I did...you have pence...no sense...I mean cents.

Rule of thumb? Yeah, thats british. One of the kings decreed that a man could not beat his wife with a stick larger in girth than his thumb.

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_two_cents_(idiom)

"My two cents" and its longer version "put my two cents in" is an American idiomatic expression used to preface the stating of one's opinion. By deprecating the opinion to follow — suggesting its value is only two cents, a very small amount — the user of the phrase hopes to lessen the impact of a possibly contentious statement, showing politeness and humility. Though sometimes it's used with irony when expressing a strongly felt opinion. The phrase is also used out of habit to preface uncontentious opinions.
For example: "If I may put my two cents in, that hat doesn't do you any favors." (More polite way of saying, for example: That hat is ugly.) An example of the shortened version: "My two cents is that you should sell that stock now."
The phrase originates in betting card games, such as poker. In these games, one must make a small bet, or ante, before beginning play. Thus, the phrase makes an analogy between entering the game and entering a conversation.
