General Motors to sell used cars on eBay
Report: Move may radically change the U.S. used-car business

Wow! A sign of the times that perhaps dealer inventory just is not moving!

Still skeptical about the success of this. Typically a Certified GM Used Car carries a 7 year, 100,000 mile warranty. So if I buy one in Arizona and have it shipped to NC, who stands behind the Certified status? I would assume GM. But what if they just want to push inventory and my mechanic here would not have given it the Certified stamp of approval.
-----------------------------------------------

General Motors said Friday that 3,900 auto dealers who sell GM’s Certified Used Cars will list their entire inventories on eBay Motors, according to industry publication Automotive News.

The listings will be free for dealers, the report said, and could radically alter the used-car business.

Mark Matthews, GM’s director of used-vehicle activities, told Automotive News that the certified used-vehicle inventory of dealers who sell GM Certified-brand vehicles will be listed on the third-party classified site starting in the second quarter.

GM’s brands include used Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Pontiac and Oldsmobile vehicles. Cadillac, Hummer, Saab and Saturn have separate certified used-vehicle programs, but their certified-used inventories will be listed on the site, too, Matthews told the publication.

The eBay Motors Web site has 11 million unique users and the agreement with GM allows dealers who sell GM brands to show their certified-used inventory to them. The program will become even more attractive to dealers and consumers if other manufacturers post their certified-used inventory on the site, too, Matthews told Automotive News.

Man, thats gonna ruin ebaymotors. One of the main reasons I go to ebaymotors to buy a car is becuase you deal with an individual or a small dealer, and the lure of a good buy. The site will be flooded with a bunch of market priced cars that one will have to sort through to find a keeper. I'm not a fan...

You have to also wonder about actually going to a dealership? What if the vehicle you like is being bid on at ebay? rather than being able to buy you have to bid?

I also see this a opening the door to a whole new breed of scams and scammers. Not only will you have the verify it is a Certified Used Car but also certify the seller, the VIN, the dealer, the dealership. I think you may be about to see all kinds of scams creeping up to claim that they are a GM dealer and basically selling on JunkBay.com.

how safe is eBay for cars? I've never used it and I don't think I ever will, but what are the reviews in general?

Depending on the age of the auto, any PEZ items found under the seats are of questionable origin and value.

A coworker has just bought his forth car off ebay (actually a Christmas gift). A wonderful and slick 2005 BMW (something numbers ???) convertible for his daughter.

He only buys from an established dealership rather than an individual. This one came from Florida. Delivered to his front door he said it was less than $17,500.

He claims his foreign car care guy at the local dealership in Greensboro NC said it would be 5000 more on the lot.

The others were a Jeep Grand Cherokee for one of his sons, another BMW for another son, and a 2004 Mercedes e320 for his wife. The MB is exceptionally nice and looks and drives like new.

He drives a 1994 Ford aerostar Van. I keep giving him a hard time about that. So he went out and bought a pocket rocket...it a kawasaki and supposedly the fastest production bike made. He passed me on the interstate like I was in a parking lot.

Anyways, I think alot of these are off-lease vehicles that former customers are turning in.

So I guess if you deal with a dealership then there may be a better chance of getting the right thing at a good price. He also says he only deals with ones that publish their phone numbers in the listings to establish contact and ask questions.

I think its a great idea. GM will probably have some great deals since its much cheaper to sell online.

GM is smart...cuts out all overhead and commissions and I'm sure they made a deal with ebay for all costs associated with the listing.

this also means gradually, we'll have tons of dealers and employees going out of business.

I see this as an ominous sign. In the years to come, more and more retail jobs will shrink, while service jobs get outsourced.

This is not new. GM dealers and many other brands have been selling their inventory for years on Ebay. All this whole deal is is a stamp of approval from GM to go ahead and keep doing it.
