Im sure you've ran into my many threads asking questions about my forum www.guitarheroforum.com

Im just wondering why i get new members who never post and never have activity after they register?

I'm pretty sure its not spam b/c i have email confirmation and that captcha stuff enabled......plus if it were spam they would at least post a spam message for some pron, lol.

Any ideas would help. I'd say for every 10 registrations i get one that posts pretty frequently.

It could be a couple of reasons.

1. Most people who joins forums don't necessarily post. They register and do not go back frequently.

2. Spam - On a forum i created. There were two types of spam.

The first, bots would register random names. Second, spam posts.

Sometimes they were a mixture of both. Bots would register and they wouldn't post spam until a month later.

As far as people joining and not posting, yes that's true but probably more of a chance of being bots.

is there a fast way to prune these members? i know you can delete inactive members, but what a good rule of thumb for time? Like 30 days?

Sure the best way would be to prune members that have never returned 30 days after registration. You don't want to use 30 days in general (or whatever time you decide) because if I am a regular poster of your forum and happen to go 33 days without checking in, you would remove me too :)

I'd also set up some kind of decent captcha system to prevent the bots from registering new accounts.

70% of users are CD-ROM. They just read, but can't write. Slap them with a large trout.
