Just opened an account at Namewinner after seeing my Snaps lose a lot lately.

I was debating if a realty name listed at Namewinner was worth the min bid of $8.75. The domain had zero returns at Suggeston Tool and weak Google returns so I was not too sure if it was worth a reg fee.

Decided to bid $8.75 after much thought but was amazed to see the name had already been bid up to $310.00. There is no way in the world it could reasonably be valued that high.

Have others here run into similar seemingly very high-bid names? Why does that happen anyway? Could there be any other reason other than people being willing to bid almost anything at Namewinner for questionable high-value names?

realnames: obviously the name is worth that much since someone is willing to pay

Why do Namewinner bids seem so high?

Because some of them are.

icehole summed it up...domains are worth whatever price someone is willing to pay for them, no more, no less.

BD and ULT have HUGE budgets.

Was it possibly a typo?

Ult would want it then :)

No, not a typo. I wonder what percentage of the NW bids is from those 2? I would not be surprised if it was less than expected. They have their own methods which are likely better than NW, especially BD.

BTW, on those names I reg'd from your posts, can you please estimate what percentage of suggestion tool monthly numbers vs actual type-in traffic.

No one knows for sure but a rough estimate would be good. Thanks.

Tons of names that were registered from 97-02 are all being picked back up from daily drops or even old deleted lists as more people are finding out about deleted domains especially in their area of business. I watch the new registrations daily to track what was registered and by whom. I have seen an increase in registrations in several markets. The internet is here to stay and people realize that with the right keywords you can run a very successful business and cut marketing costs at the same time. Domain prices are on the rise and the WLS will only help this along. People now know which names will drop ahead of time so more people are bidding on names they want. I think we will see more people holding on to their names instead of letting them drop. Buydomains cannot afford to speculate on every possible domain name or else they would loose money big time. They can't even afford buying a snap most times for the names I go head to head with them on. Buy they do a great job of beating namewinner and snap a lot on good names.

If a name has a $310 bid it means that at least 2 bidders are willing to pay $310 for it. One of them is willing to pay $310 as a maximum, the other's bid is unknows but it's => $310
If there was only one bidder who is willing to pay $310 then the bid would be $8.95

I agree people are picking up keywords for their specific industry. I have about 100 just for one of my outdoor products sites and 15-20 just for my chimineas.com site. It is more cost effective than paying 50 cents a click for my number 1 keyword at overture!
Basically, I can bid what would seem like a ton of money for a mediocre name but I will be saving money in the long run.

I imagine the bids are going to go even higher as WLS gets closer.

hmmm... I wonder how long this can go on, if both BD and Ult are spending about $15k-$20k daily on domains...

If they are bringing in more then they are spending then they can go on for as long as they want...

The last of the Mohicans. WLS is like a looming thunderstorm at the background about to break.
