Three and four letter domains are ususally used for acronyms. Some companies will actually name the company to fit an affordable acronym to have a short domain. Those that are common are easier to use and remember. The odds of finding a buyer for zqx.com are pretty remote compared to a name like ica.com or ami.com. You can probably quickly think of uses for the latter two, but zqx.com is virtually useless as an acronym as well as hard to say and remember. More potential buyers=higher prices.

Exactly. Just ask yourself how many words start with 'Z' or 'X' to begin with? Not that many.

So imagine trying to name a company based on one of those. It's very difficult.

Q = Quality :)

For every rule there is an exception and all letters have their "slots":-

"xerox/xtreme/xmas", "youth/yankee/yeast", "zero/zinc/zone" and many more.

For some it maybe letters that fit perfectly for their business/enterprise, for others it may be a chance to get a name for a better price than they could otherwise afford.

Of course the sequence of the letters may well also indicate their useability.

MrWebname has a good point. As well as the letters it's also the sequence that matters.

"X" is not a good letter in English, but that doesn't mean sex.com or xxx.com is bad..

:)

"Qoo" is meaningless in neither Chinese nor Japanese. However, it's a brandname of Coca Cola. They have some juice products using this name. As per their interpretation, just because it spells like "Cool".

Qxyz.com might do well as a

QUICK = Q

Qxyz... index/directory of some sort.. could mold into any QuickReference resource. Would require branding of
Qxyz.com

I'de market it using the Q as a "cap" letter.

goodluck.

FYI: Q, X and Z (or actually Zh) are common consonants in Pinyin Chinese.

The general rul of thumb is that q's are bad unless followed by a j and if you have a combination of any 3 of qxyz then that is worth double. Z's are only good when they are the second letter.

qxyz. The reason is the sheer power of the probability.

which one do you think could fit a US company?

acu.com
aci.com
acm.com
acq.com
acz.com

However!! Z is different. Z (if it is the first letter) has a pretty good chance of fitting an initial of a German company.

Also pointed out the sequence is important.
