I understand buying and selling of commercial domains for financial gain, but .org's were meant for non profit organizations. They are the ones who contribute to our social base of knowledge, help those in need, and fight for just causes. I would hate to be parking pages that could possibly be used to make this world a better place.

No domain is going to make the world a better place.

Just so you know, most non-profits are run to get as much money as possible and avoid paying taxes. Do you know how much money and real estate the Mormon Church has?

Do not let the terms "Non Profit", and "Charity" fool you. Did you know that most of the credit card counseling places are owned by the credit card companies? Those are non-profit, too.

Everyone has a cause and everyone has an agenda. Some people don't register .orgs, some people don't eat meat, and some people understand that there are very few issues that are really PURE.

Wow Sam, nice response. I was going to say the same thing. Non-profit means, the business cannot profit, but the employees??? WHoooooooooo do they make a KILLING... Haha

My .orgs make me $XX.XX per week Do you want to reconsider???

This is directly from the .org registry:

.ORG was created in 1984 as one of the Internet's original top-level domains (TLDs) and was designated as "open" and "unrestricted," meaning that anyone can register a .ORG site, but it primarily is used by noncommercial entities around the world, including nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations, philanthropies, charities, religious organizations, educational and cultural institutions, arts organizations, sports clubs, and others. Today, .ORG is a recognized brand that includes the Internet's most trusted Web sites, sites that also are known for providing valuable information.

Sounds to me like we can reg .orgs; aren't we providing valuable information?

Some people become PIMPs for a living and some hoard Hard Drugs....

Edit -- Now that I re-read my post, I think I could not clarify what I was trying to say. I meant to say that there is no standard definition on Morality and everyone sees it differently. Ask any of drug-dealers or pimps if they are doing something wrong and tell me what they say.

I have a portfolio of about 200-300 .org names and I don't have any bad feelings about it. In fact, I am pretty proud of certain of those gems. =)

If I had a premium .org I would think long and hard about it.

Most domainers are non profit too, so they fit into this category as well

There are no rules about .org so I think it's pretty wide open. Charities use .com, .net, .ca and all other sorts of extensions. What would a charity do with coffee.org, or movies.org anyway? If .org was only limited to non-profits it would end up like .travel or .name, keeping it open to all at least helps keep the extension alive and viable.

Why not just wait until a non-profit wants to buy a .org from you and then cut 'em a deal? That way you'll at least know if you're making a difference.

I just sold a 2-word .org for 5k last month via sedo, and the buyer seems to be a search service company. I think .org is more valuable than before.

.ORG stands for ORGANIZATION.
the days it stood for non profit are long gone.

the same with .NET and NETWORKS.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying and selling .ORGs and/or using them as needed.
I can not see the point of this thread.
