Without Wikipedia, I don't think Wiki would have 1/10th of the name recognition as it does today.

I also think that price was a poor deal for the buyer, but time will tell. The name has a lot of potential but development is still a risky proposition, because it simply might not live up to the potential of the name.

And in this case, the amount of interest (money you could have made just sitting on the investment) on 3 Mil. puts you in the hole every day a bare minimum $427. That's difficult to deal with right out of the gate.

Keep in mind that Wiki.com has not changed hands yet and the potential buyer has paid only the first $10,000 toward the name. He is to make six monthly 10K payments, then pay a huge $2.8 million balloon payment after that. He can choose not to pay that balloon and walk away, forfeiting only the payments he will have made up to that point in time. It won't be a done deal for at least 6 months, if then.

wiki.com is the definitive badass name--launching a company means 50M for US outdoor ad space alone. as long as they don't screw up the site and basic pr, 3M is a bargain because their name means they can't be ignored. people will check to see if what wiki.com has going is bigger or better than whatever anyone else is pushing in that niche. got a generic? hang onto it, full stop.

The ovt with extension figure is far from impressive. This domain was not bought for it's traffic for sure.

the searches for 'wiki' itself are huge. somebody paid 7.5M for diamond.com this year, and that had non-existent type-in traffic because it isn't plural. wiki.com will live on top of google unless you build the whole thing inside a gif.
