Data centers are build in concrete buildings resembling war bunkers. Some even, underground - with multiple power sources and diesel generators.

Underground is great with flood events.. :)

I'm willing to bet you might experience a few hours of downtime to a day at most, and that's it.

I doubt even that, Ed. Downtime at such large data centers is minutes. Unless we are talking about a direct nuclear hit.

DirectNIC survived Katrina with full power the whole time - ask Donny about it!

I certainly HOPE that company is destroyed.

Out of all of the hosting companies in the world, by FAR most hack attempts, viruses and post scans of my server come from their network, sometimes to the tune of 100,000 or more per day.

It's been rather quiet today... nice!

If this is any indication, from WiKipedia....

"At approximately 6:30pm (CDT) on 31 May 2008, an electrical transformer in the equipment room at the "H1" data center in Houston short circuited, causing a fire and explosion which resulted in extensive damage to the equipment room. All remaining power to the facility was shut down on orders from the local fire department. The incident resulted in approximately 9,000 servers being taken off line. Most of the 7,500 affected customers services were restored by 2 June 2008, however servers located in the ground level "Phase One" of the datacenter were not brought online until 5 June 2008. There has been severe damage to some customers hard drives as a result of the power loss in the H1 data center."
