I would like to know your take on "WiMax." I have several domain names geared towards this industry and it looks very promising. I recently read an article in "Business 2.0" and I was surprised to learn that major companies have spent billions of dollars on their WiMax networks that they will be launching later this year. Unlike Wi-Fi, which was designed to send signals no further than 300 feet, only a few WiMax transmitters are needed to blanket an entire city with high speed internet connectivity. Sprint Nextel will launch their $3 billion dollar network later this year in select cities, Baltimore, Chicago, and Washington. Sprint hopes to have coverage available to 100 million Americans in about 35 regions nationwide by 2009. It looks like the end of WiFi is finally here.....

I've followed WiMax and it is impressive. It has been awhile, but you might want to search on some technical tests that were being conducted in rural areas of Argentina.

As for usage, I am not sure how much of an impact it will have to the general population. It would be my guess that the term could go unnoticed, much like how we are covered with Sprint's EVDO. Not many "normal" people know or care about searching for EVDO - they care about being able to connect to the Internet everywhere.

WiFi and WiMax are related but understand WiMax is not meant to replace WiFi. In fact, they will ultimately compliment each other (actually they do now).

Sprint/Nextel is considering selling thier portion of the spectrum because of the investment costs. My guess is Clearwire will buy it.

WiMax is proving more costly than originally thought. However, the technology will take hold in the next two or three years and the cost of building out will likely trend much like wifi does today.

And it is a misnomer that WiFi signals can only be picked up within 300-500 feet of an access point. Depending on the equipment one can transmit those signals much much further. Although operating in the 2.4 Ghz range is a problem - cant get around the FCC there.

WiMax names, hold onto them or sell them to me.

Also, you will soon see wifi and wimax compatible wireless Internet cards in your laptops (Intel).

Well wimax will surely replace wifi as the popular choice..wmax has a fantastic range which goes up to kilometers..so you can just setup the connection at home and use your own security enabled internet connection kilometers away from your home at faster speeds than wifi :)

Did a whole presentation on wimax a few weeks back..its going to change quite a lot of things IMHO.

also wibree technology by nokia is good from what i understand it is going to replace conventional bluetooth...but don't know much about it.

a university in my city was spearheading a wimax project, i havnt heard much about it. I did notice some weird antenna towers going up around the city about 6-8 months ago.

Bottom line is this type of service will be huge, hell my families company dishes out right now $5000+ per year for wireless internet using cellualar technology.

also right now there is an open tender to blanket our city with wireless internet, so i guess we will see what type of technology is used.
