WLS Goes to Trial

"After about an hour and a half of oral argument, the Court decided that the most expeditious way to handle the Dotster-eNom WLS case against ICANN was to set it for trial. A tentative trial date was set for Tuesday, December 16, 2003. Judge Webster took the motion for preliminary injunction under advisement. He asked ICANN's counsel whether implementation of WLS was imminent. The answer was that ICANN and Verisign continued to have significant issues separating them in the WLS negotiations. In light of those ongoing discussions, Judge Webster asked ICANN to consider putting off the implementation of WLS until after the December trial date. ICANN is expected to provide a response to that request soon. If ICANN agrees, the preliminary injunction won't be necessary and today's issues will be decided instead at trial in December. If ICANN disagrees, Judge Webster likely will issue his opinion on the preliminary injunction motion in the coming week. More comments soon. "

Indeed, Askii.

Just a matter of continuing the pressure, and WLS (and Sitefinder) will simply be footnotes in history.

Hmm. Monday is the 27th. ( NRR-WLS Rollout day?) Tuesday is the 28th. Will be interesting to see what happens.

Hopefully not this.

Netsol charges my credit card for 100 successful NRR slots on monday, court places injunction tuesday. Netsol says in order to keep the spot reserved until the trial is over they need to keep my money until a final decision.

Is network solutions going to tell anybody antything regarding this? They could literally be cahrging people 10s of millions on monday. Any answers appreciated.

Your wishes are for naught. I have had communications (email & phone) with Snapnames, who is handling the software for WLS, and with Verisign. WLS will not launch until it is posted on the Verisign Website for a period of time (I recall they said something about 30 days). NSI has no intention of charging anyone until WLS is live AND they have secured the WLS reservation for you.

While I am no fan of NSI or Verisign, these people are not stupid. Now, I have to admit that Sitefinder's crash implementation brought Verisign's intelligence into question, especially the timing, but they cannot afford to screw up WLS.

I agree. Point blank they are just ignorant and greedy. That doesn't make them stupid.

When does the service launch?
Currently, the Next Registration Rights service is scheduled to launch in the 4th quarter of 2003.

I think they would be dumb not to be.

Should by chance WLS go through for whatever period of time, SN has alot of money to make, maybe.

I also agree, VS isn't stupid, sometimes I think they make unsmart decisions, but I wouldn't call them stupid ;)

I do not think "Sitefinder" was stupid, it was actually a good idea they should have done it long ago it would have work better.

I fail to see why having a page saying impossbile to find "vcxvx.com" is better than ads with relevant website!

SiteFinder breaks technical standards, by rewriting the expected error codes to instead point to Verisign's pay-per-click web directory, and threatens the security and stability of the Internet

Snapnames will be making alot of money and taking it away from all these companies and customers :

The internet is more than just the web. Error codes are used for diagnosing problems with many other protocols, besides websites.

Even if it was just websites:

1) having error codes allows the USER to decide how to handle them (e.g. their browser could be configured to go to Google, or their choice of sites)
2) mobile users would waste data transfer, which is expensive, being sent to Sitefinder, instead of receiving a tiny error code
3) VeriSign is typo-squatting on people's domains and trademarks -- John Zuccarini is sitting in jail for essentially the same thing
4) VeriSign is getting the traffic for FREE, via an abuse of their registry monopoly

among other things.

Dear Network Solutions(R) Customer,

The scheduled launch date of October 27, 2003 for our Next Registration Rights(sm) service has been delayed.

This delay does not impact the status of your pre-order(s) and your credit card has not been charged. In fact we will continue to accept pre-orders. Remember only one pre-order is accepted for each domain name, and your credit card will not be charged until the service is available. Customers who have placed pre-orders will receive a confirmation e-mail as soon as the service is available.

Thank you for your Next Registration Rights pre-order.

Sincerely,

Network Solutions Customer Support
