Interesting how the only registrars foaming at the mouth over WLS are either drop clubs, or dropped domain auctioners or sellers of private reg lines.>>>>>>>>>>>

Introducing the "Domain Justice Coalition"
posted by Mueller on Thursday June 19 2003, @06:11PM

14 ICANN registrars, hailing from The West (and, uh, Ottawa, Rhode Island and Israel) have formed a posse and are ridin' all night to bring American justice to ICANN-town. Yeeeee haaaaaa!
The posse claims that ICANN's WLS decision "will result in hundreds of domain name registrars going out of business." (This would be Very Bad, because there are only about 180 registrars accredited, as far as we know.)

Here's a list of the deputies:

000Domains, Little Rock, AR
BuyDomains.com/Raredomains.com, Bethesda, MD
CommuniGal Communication Unlimited, Israel
Domain Systems, Pompano Beach, FL
Dotster, Vancouver, WA
Enameco, Houston, TX
eNom, Redmond, WA
Fiducia, Minden, NV
Go Daddy Software, Inc., Scottsdale, AZ
Name Intelligence, Inc., Bellevue, WA
Parava Networks, Houston, TX
Pool.com, Ottawa, Canada
Registration Technologies, Inc., Greenville, RI
TierraNet Inc./Domain Discover, San Diego, CA

hmmm the congressmen must be in the posse to

A plan to tame the speculative feeding frenzy that surrounds expiring "dot-com" Internet addresses came under fire today from two lawmakers who said the proposal could create a monopoly for Internet addressing giant VeriSign Inc.

The Fair, Transparent and Competitive Internet Naming Act, introduced today by Reps. Brian Baird (D-Wash.) and Jay Inslee (D-Wash.), would keep the nonprofit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) from enacting the proposal until the U.S. General Accounting Office reviews it and the process that created it.

The Fair, Transparent and Competitive Internet Naming Act, introduced today

seems to me thats the goal of the act is not a comment on the current situation or even a defense of it but to evaluate the impact of wls on the marketplace

A measure too late, a cancer too deep.

Yes, it's all about $$$. Verisign proposed this system to milk from the domain drop market, and those being affected will of course oppose it.

Perhaps the correct title should be WLS Hypocrites VS anti-WLS Hypocrites :)

GoDaddy has an open system that is fixed-price. The initial assertion is false.

The registrars are definitely helping out consumers, preserving choice and competition by their actions. Recall that there was a *consensus* against WLS, not only by registrars, but amongst the various constituencies of the Names Council. Only a corrupt ICANN Board ignored that consensus, in violation of their consensus-based procedures.

See Names Council Minutes, approving the report with a supermajority, and thus a consensus policy *AGAINST* WLS:

http://www.dnso.org/clubpublic/council/Arc10/msg00395.html

"Item 3: Wait Listing Service - report and vote to adopt
.......
"Philip Sheppard moved for a vote of adoption for the report as a whole.

15 voted in favour, 3 voted against (the members of the gTLD constituency) 1 abstention (IPC). Greg Ruth was absent, no proxy given. The motion carried with a greater than two-thirds majority making this a consensus policy recommendation of the DNSO. This reflected the vote within the task force itself on the recommendations.
Decision 3: Report adopted"

And also, Louis Touton on consensus:

http://www.icann.org/minutes/report-vgrs-wls-17apr02.htm

"If, however, there are specific reasons to conclude that the legitimate interests of others are likely to be harmed, then ICANN's existing obligation to seek consensus whenever possible before acting suggests that it should invoke the formal consensus development mechanisms that currently exist prior to any decision by the ICANN Board."
.......
"Under these circumstances, and given the existing conceptual approach of ICANN to seek consensus where possible, it is my judgment that the Board should not seek to decide how to deal with this request without invoking the formal consensus development processes currently established within ICANN.

This judgment is reinforced by the Registrars Constituency vote opposing implementation of WLS and the fact that the Names Council Transfer Task Force is currently considering the WLS issue, with a report to the Board expected in June."

Don't we all remember a few years ago when Network Solutions had the registrar monopoly? Don't we all remember the associated high prices, terrible service, and poor security?

My, how quickly we forget!

Sure, the free market is a brutal place to compete, but it is certainly better than handing over the keys to the Kingdom to the likes of a John Rockefeller, Bill Gates, or Network Solutions.

Don't we all remember a few years ago when .COM had a human-made-wannabe monopoly? Its been so few years in human history, and people still think .COM is the be all and end all of the Internet. Laggard thinking in this morphing space. History always repeats itself.

The more I read these domain industry boards, the more I come to the conclusion that some of the people who support WLS support it not because they really believe it will help them, consumers, or the industry, but because they want to punish those people more successful than themselves.

Define success? If the definition of success is to successfully grab other people's trash or to try to steal legitimate domains from under the noses of others because of some admin mistake, then you can have all the success you want.

1. WLS will definitely help domain resellers get more sales enquiries

2. WLS will definitely help domain owners realise that their reg fee was not wasted after all and maybe they should do something about it

3. WLS will definitely help all those small players wasting money on countless services and ending up empty handed for it all.

4. WLS will definitely help the buyer/developer make a decison on what to do - contact the registrant or WLS holder - rather than wasting time looking at all other alternatives and end up losing the name.

5. WLS will definitely help improve the image of the industry by making it as clean and transparent as possible. The rampant insider RRP deals and weird shill bids today is making the industry look very shady, imho.
