I have received an enquiry to buy

BoatLoan.com.

Please can you give me some advice on end user value for this name.

Google 21,300 pages
Top level extensions and .co.uk and .ca taken
Overture 5137 searches in Dec 02 for boatloan, but none for boatloan.com

Also offer is either lumpsum or 10 equal monthly payments totalling 2.5 times lumpsum.

I am in UK and offer appears to have come from California.

How would you suggest I proceed?

Many thanks for any help.

I'm not qualified enough to estimate value but for sure I'd go with the 10-month plan if trustworthy: 2.5x is much better.

Maybe value in the $10K range??? sorry I'm not sure

If you've actually been approached for it, then wired_ww is in the ballpark, but I would ask $20k for it. It's a VERY targeted name for a finance company specialising in boats. Suggest you don't bet 'on the come' myself, by stretching the deal out. Take the cash and be done with it in one transaction. If they're a finance outfit, they should have the bucks and $20k is my valuation in view of the fact it's an unsolicited enquiry :)

On the other hand, the fact that they're suggesting 10 payments = 2.5 x lump sum would suggest that they're not that well funded. OR, it could indicate they DO have the dough and if they ARE a properly funded financial outfit, the price you should ask, in my opinion, is 80% of what the 2.5 x lump sum equates to.

The key here is to check out the bidder. If you feel they are funded properly, then I would ask just that; 80% of 2.5 x the lump sum.

Any funded finance outfit would not offer you 2.5 x lump over ten months--that's extortionate interest that they would be charging themselves.

PM me if you're confused :)

Best of luck!

Accept the 10 payment 2.5x option but do not transfer the domain until the last payment has been received. Offer to do the Administrative tasks until the domain is paid for.

David, I find it useful to ignore people who post a single dollar value without bothering to formulate a helpful, reasoned reply, however brief, especially when the item in question is clearly worth a great deal more. Don't get put off. DrWho has a good suggestion. Take care.

Thanks for all your replies and apologies for the delay in responding but I have been having some problems with my computer.

Most of the opinions put the value in the region of what I was expecting, which is about 10 times what has been offered!

The offer suggested not transferring the name until all the payments had been completed and if any were missed, previous payments would be forfeit.

I realise that the legal section may be the better area and I apologise if I upset anyone here in this section, but are there any legal things to watch out for - effectively I would be renting the name for 10 months with the transfer completed when the final payment is made. With the offeror in California and me in the UK, are there any standard wordings I can use to protect us both against anything going wrong in the process?

Also, how do I go about finding more about the identity of the offeror? (At present a hotmail address is being used although a telephone number has been given.)

One more point - I had thought of contacting all the boat loan companies that come top of the heap at Google and Yahoo to see if they would be interested in bidding for the name.

Should I give the offeror a chance first and then go to the others or do it anyway and try to get them all bidding against each other?

I got it last February and have been meaning to develop it ever since but have been busy with other things. Also my wife has been in hospital a lot with heart problems (now hopefully fixed with some stents).

If that bidder is suggesting appx. $1000 over 10 months and has a hotmail address then I would look for another buyer mate. If you PM me I may make you an offer myself if you're talking that money. DO your prospecting on Google first! Hope you wife's OK. Regards, Dale.

Whoever you sell it, use an escrow service. when full payment is achieved, complete the transaction.

Good advice on using a escrow service, they will keep the file active untill all the conditions of sale are met. However you must fax them the contract and make them aware of the timeline or they will automatically time out your transaction because of the long time to completion.

It should get around 50-75 type-ins a day not bad if you are marketing boat loans. Est. value if end user is in the boat finance biz $2,000.00-$3,000.00 IMHO. Could get as high as $5,000.00 if buyer is large enough company.

The best keyword is of course is boatloans, but it only get three times the potential traffic.

Ask them to consider what it costs them in marketing to produce one good lead, this name will give them around 50 qualified leads a day!

Many thanks to everyone who posted their comments and advice.

I am pleased to say that the name has now been sold to a company in the boat finance industry for a $ five figure sum, so well done to all those who valued the name in that region.

Escrow.com appears to have worked well - it tells me that the deal is concluded and I am just waiting for the funds to be wire transferred to the UK.

Once again thank you to everyone for their valuable help.

Best regards
