Too bad, I register domain w/ Yahoo for $4.98 each, and got confirmation email saying the $4.98 is ok.
However, after login Yahoo, I check the billing history, it says it's $9.98 (the original price). I try to contact Yahoo by email, but after dozens of hours, no response.
Godaddy.com ($1.99 for a limited time) recently discovered domain parking revenue. They are astonished (putting it mildly) at the amount of raw revenue they are generating on inactive names pointed at their Google parking pages. Yahoo was just trying to compete so they dropped their pants -- i mean, 'price', to match them.
Godaddy does a better job upselling "extra services" than Yahoo so they may be able to hold the line better... or maybe Yahoo sensed that at 1.99 too many people were drowning them with truly unmonetizable crap names (i.e. if they gave them away for free we would all try to screw with them by registering millions of 23 character random combos that get no traffic)
But the low prices you see are a consequence of PPC parking pages. They are hoping to God you register something (anything) available, that makes sense, that gets type-in traffic, that they can monetize and that you will either forget to renew, or forget to set up under your hostnames (leave on their parking page), so they can make money on the back of your good instincts and creativity. It is always ABOUT THE TRAFFIC.
Register a name with Godaddy or Yahoo at your risk.. Millions will go like lambs to the slaughter.
Yes, it is a sad fact that much of the market comprises of sheep that try often hopelessly to imitate any success achieved by others. On the other hand this can be of benefit. It will only take one high profile IDN sale for that market to explode!
