This is a very, very sad day for me . I was making $200+/month from Yahoo traffic, and now that is going to drop to about $0/month. Google now has a near monopoly of search results on the web.

But... that is the nature of the internet.

Hard to say kidkool, notice how Yahoo changed all/most mentions of Google to "third party search engine provider". Hopefully they will be into something better.

Hopefully we'll find out when/if they announce it. They have to be scrambling to keep ahead at this stage ;)

Google is a good engine but this is NOT good news...IMO

We will have to wait a few weeks and see how it all plays out...I think their is more to come...

theyve probably said third party engine because theres been rumours of them using inktomi in future

whether they go with them or not is anyones guess but i think yahoo owns 10% of google if i remember right - but googe is getting too big for yahoos liking

What bothers me the most is that Google is slowly becoming a search monopoly on the web. Sure, they are currently the search engine that gives the most relevant results, but aren't you troubled that they are the default search now on Yahoo, AOL, and Netscape? Together with google.com, they are probably controlling over 80% of searches done on the internet.

With this one move Yahoo has basically thrown its entire directory out the window. Yahoo's search is now identical to the Google search.

i wouldnt say 80% though your right that googles results are much more prominent now

i for one am glad that yahoo dropped its directory - the majority of results were years out of date

they have now switched to the dmoz directory so the open directory has become even more important also

i think that inktomi is still very important too - there are rumours that yahoo might team up with them soon but who knows:)

Agree with this. So far Google is still doing good though, hopefully the 'monopoly' would not be detrimental to the quality of the search results. Do hope that Yahoo could come back up eventually and make up another technology to complete against Google :)

i think that google has learned from yahoos mistakes

paid inclusion by its nature means that the majority of websites will be excluded from searches and consequently google wouldnt be king of search - so i dont think theyll go down that route

at present they are still acting in everyones interests so fingers crossed it remains that way

So this means that if I had just paid to have a listing added to yahoo, the money would be down the drain?

Yes, you would have thrown your money down the crapper.

Not really. You still benefit search ranking-wise. Just maybe not Yahoo traffic
