so im trying to build up a list of domains for a client and i requested a price from a domain owner. The name isnt that strong (•••me.com) the seller has the nerve to ask for 25k. his first reply is this:

me: how much are you selling ***me.com for?

_____________________

Thank you for the e-mail.

The domain was appraised at $25,000

We are accepting offers.

Thanks

Jim

It may be BS but it doesn't really matter, the seller can request any price he/she wants.

Agreed. This is where you are supposed to counter-offer if you don't like the price. ;)

Well many people seem to attach importance to guesstibot appraisals or otherwise. Look at the result.
Appraisals are double-edged swords.

Domaining Rule #7: Sellers sell at the price they decide on... If it exceeds your budget or is overpriced, move on...

I think the issue lies with the delivery of an appraisal document *after* an agreement is reached.

He's just using the appraisal amount to avoid making the first price move. He never said that was his asking price.

You should just ignore or dismiss the appraisal amount and either a) make an offer, or b) ask him for his best "price"

A lot of domainers prefer to argue about methodology, intelligence, or some other facet of the business when making deals, as opposed to just jumping in to the offer counter-offer mode and getting it done.

A simple response to him would be something like:

As a fellow domainer/reseller, I understand the value of appraisals and how they have little relation to actual market value. I take your response as looking for me to make the first move.

I offer $250 for the name in question, which I feel is a fair price in today's market. If you are serious about selling this one, let me know. While this name is a "nice to have" for my project, it certainly isn't a "must have" and I have to budget accordingly.

or

As a fellow domain speculator and reseller, I don't put much stock into appraisal services for domain names.

This is not a "must have" domain for me. Please provide your best price on this one, and let's see if we can do some business.

His reply sucks bigtime. I would counter with a lower price than I've offered previously.

Ouch, I've missed there was no offer :p

Email him back and tell him what your budget is for the domain, If he can sell it for that, then great, If not, tell him you'll be looking for another domain.

Don't play the appraisal game, you'll be going down a road that never ends.

Note that you could use the same strategy against him. Retain the service of reputable companies, Sedo & Moniker perhaps, have the name appraised and send the results if they are considerably lower.

The problem with that is, If the buyer goes to the trouble of doing this, he's letting the seller know he really wants the domain, making the negotiations even that much harder.

The fact that he wont disclose the appraisals tells me he doesn't have any, So if you play the game and throw counter appraisals at him, he'll just make up another BS excuse to warrant his asking price.

I would just simply reply with my best offer for the domain and if he is not agreeable, will just move on.

No offense, but now you let him know what an amateur you are.

I would just simply reply with my best offer for the domain and if he is not agreeable, will just move on.

Exactly
