I think so if they are really going to be as strict with enforcement as they say. The price and controls mean it will have the vanity/ego aspect that plays so well in domaindom.

Actually, I find .pro kinda pretentious. If you are there, you don't need to flaunt it.

 

Have you ever noticed how the "pro's" they're targetting get the letters after their name in everything they do? .pro is just an extension of that. And yes, its pretentious - but thats the environment they will be used to.

.pro is a sporadic hit; registration hotspots cumming in from Amsterdam, Kings Cross, under the 59th Street bridge,NYC, to name but a few. Don't know why!

Throughly though, can you imagine a doctor's business card with .pro as part of his email address? The first question that comes to mind is, 'Who is he trying to convince and where's the exit sign?'.

Nobody, apart from inadequate or fake professionals with fake credentials will use this address. .name & .pro are both the same.... crap tld's.

The pro registry hopes to make registration watertight so that fakes and fraudsters will find it difficult to misrepresent themselves. This is the value, if only one, of .pro.

That's why they are selling the name for such a high price.

 

Rarely does a registry/registrar know their ass from their elbow. How are they going to take on such complex issues as determining professional credentials in 230 countries world wide? How many fake doctors alone are practicing medicine in th US at the moment? .pro is the cure, hardly.

When, and I mean when, the registry/registrars starts making errors in verifying credentials or unwittingly approve fake credentials, .pro will be left open to lawsuits from plaintiffs who found doctors/other professionals under the .pro tld.

If you are having eye surgery done, would you:
1. look for a doctor with a website/email address ending in .pro
or
2. Verify that the surgeon is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

If you answered 1., please contact the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and ask for a specialist in lobotomies.

.pro is an example of the intelligence/unintelligence that exists at registrars/registries at the moment. In the belief of making vast sums of money, they think they can put a bunch of professions into one basket ( one tld) and extrapolate lots of dosh from unwitting professionals. Oh, how naive they are.

Using .pro to determine credentials would seem pretty dumb - but it will be an exclusive club and people pay for membership to them.

Example of how it could be used: for a doctor only website, the membership could be limited to just those with email addresses in .pro (which could be verified by the click to activate email check).

Just a thought.

There will be a small group of buyers who will like the elitist posturing of .pro. Its really up to the registry to convince them that the filtering process is credible and robust enough.

But I would be certain that there will be a disclaimer clause buried somewhere under registration conditions to avoid lawsuits that arise from misrepresentation.
