at that point, it was obvious I was dealing with a reseller, one who uses a Gmail address BTW.

Okay...but, are you saying that you wouldn't do business with him because he was a reseller, and had a gmail address?

Or, is your point that - because of these things - you couldn't negotiate a price you could accept with this person?

I once returned a valuable keyword .info to the original owner (with a refund) because I accepted that he'd let it drop 'by mistake'....I still wonder if I was being too nice...

I've gotten a few of these over the years. I've found that if you do
a little investigation you can get the info you need.

Archive.org - ask the previous owner about the domain's history.
What did they use it for.

Goog L - research the name / email / addresses etc ...

Whois - Check the owner history

ETC....

You can usually determine the validity of the claims. But a clever con
will fool you with all the right answers.

That being said. I feel once you make a decision you need not worry
what anyone else, other than your Mom and your God, think about "that"
decision.

The honor in one's belief is the true value here. You need not question
your decision in this type of matter. Do you believe in
yourself and what your intentions are? This is your answer.
