The .mobi is giving confidence to mobile users that the domain name they are entering in their mobile browser will bring up a website that is displayed correctly on their mobile device. I use my Blackberry every day to browse the Internet and believe me it is a real pleasure to read .mobi websites. Download time is fast, i am sure it will display correctly, i don't need to zoom in (where do i zoom in anyway if i don't know the site?), navigation is easy, and so on.

How many times did I go on a .com site and the site displayed correctly? Maybe 20% of the time and you have to be lucky... With .mobi it is 100% of the time, i know that as a mobile user I will have a good mobile Internet experience.

The .mobi is necessary because it provides a standard for the mobile internet industry. By using a .mobi and the compliance tools, you are sure that your mobile site will display correctly on any mobile device. It also allows new comers to create optimised sites for the mobile Internet. The iPhone is a great device but how many people use it at the moment? Can you as a web designer design mobile sites for the iPhone only?
I have two more questions for you, what is the problem in having a .com website and a mobile version under a .mobi website? Also, what if i want to create a website for mobile devices only, do I use a .com or a .mobi? I still don't understand why some people are spending time in this part of the forum to destroy the .mobi, did you guys missed the landrush?

Well you can have the best of both worlds while staying in .com. When you book your flight on AA.com for example content is tailored to your device as appropriate. The proof of concept is here. Why another extension ?
My web coding is 100% CSS & XHTML strict compliant. I use liquid layouts. I have a strong command of content negotiation techniques. I understand accessibility and implement it on a day to day basis. I use light CSS layouts. I use HTTP compression (mod_gzip/mode_deflate) in my websites. If you don't know what I am talking about then it's perfectly normal you still think .mobi is a good idea
Sticking to sound coding practices and web standard provides me with the assurance of cross-browser design.
Serving tailored content to a handheld device essentially is a content negotiation issue. A TLD has never been needed for that purpose. Overkill. The case for .mobi just isn't compelling enough.
