Actually, this one qualifies as the crafty email of the year, so far. :D

My wife and I are considering starting a small business for small wood shop dust collection. We would like to call our company [my domain] and then obviously have the web site too. Looking forward to your response.
Not bad, for the senior VP of R&D of a large corporation that makes tools.

My response: "That's awesome. Looking forward to your offer."

What gave it away? The corporate IP and full (real) name used.

I like the emphasis on "small business" for "small wood shop" :D

$30 million in sales is peanuts.

Why can't people be honest and open?

It would cost them too much.

Although I once had a guy tell me a true story and I verified it so I gave him the name cheap. It wasn't an important name to me but I was touched by his honesty. The name was bottletree.com in my case.

I believe that honesty in business is a deciding factor that can make or break a deal (especially if one has been defrauded before in a similar manner).

what was the offer?

No offer yet, apparently he has to discuss with the board of directors - I mean, his wife :D

As much as I'd like to amuse myself, I'd rather make a sale ;) So I won't insult the guy by appearing to be a smart@ss. Just want to see how he'll handle a refusal of his upcoming (and expected lowball) offer :D

The domain is not a tm, just a letter+word .com that gets some traffic and is registered in most other TLDs.

Basically every name I ever sold (or get offers on) at more than wholesale pricing (and to a non-domainer) involved dishonesty, lies and deceit by the buyers where they pretend to be a small business, a small-time individual, or a startup firm low on funds but in actuality turn out to be a big business when I check soon after the sale.

The buyer deceit has allegedly involved places like the United Nations and a large Chemical Corp in Europe and other good size businesses in between.

The most annoying past alleged dishonesty invoved the buyer the United Nations allegedly sent my way to allegedly trick me into thinking the offer was from a startup very small business who was going to sell a foreclosure course using my dot-org name when it was really allegedly for a division of the UN who could have easily paid 100times the price the buyer got me to accept.

I am not too happy about being defrauded by dishonest firms and nonreputable people :upset: Just remember whatever story they tell you is more than likely a lie.

The most powerful word in sales is "No."

When you accept an offer that does not match your property's worth, it means that you are a weak salesman. It doesn't matter if the difference is a few bucks, what matters is that you undersold it.

So remember: do your research, incidental or intentional before committing to a sale :)

Right, here is the site http://upf.org/ which went online quickly after my sale to the alleged start-up foreclosure course guy who claimed the 'F' in the name meant "foreclosure"

Just a note, you need to add "www" for it to work.

Wow:

UPF is an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations

I fully agree with these. Luckily, in my (main) niche, ANY legit person is at most 2-3 people away from me meaning anyone I know (well enough) can easily say that they either know the person directly or know someone who knows them directly so research is a snap. :)

I can find out in a matter of hours if they are being legit and honest to me and what kind of business they run.

hmmmm....works for me either way?

Just before the sale I got several (low) offers from various individuals who mentioned using the domain in the sense of a "world peace" site but the offers were all low balls and went nowhere.

Next the "foreclosure" business guy contacted me with a better offer but within a very short time after the transfer the UN related site was online. That was a couple yrs ago but still has me upset today about how they got it so cheap.

Wow! Sneaky b'stards.

Other side of the coin - I had someone email me from the .co.uk of a .com of mine (my name was reg'd in 2006 - his in 2008). Nice and upfront...

I priced the name at a very reasonable £2500 - I get 3 or 4 approaches a year for it and it makes £20+ per month from affiliate sales - he went mad saying I was charging too much just because he has the .co.uk - where can I replace a name like that for that price???

He was honest - I was fair - still couldn't win :sigh2:
