I don't think snake oil is a relevant analogy. It's more a question of selling a bicycle to do a bicycle job, a car for a car job and a van for heavier work. Hyphenated domains are great to build link pop for example.

I can't remember who's quote this is but -

No matter how fast light travels, darkness always gets there first.

Hey, if you want to spend your money on hyphens that's your business. Don't expect us to say tat you are onto something though, since we already know that those have been tried in the past and failed.

Personally I think CatsCare.com is a heck of a lot better than Cats-Care.com. The fact that it could also be CatScare.com is called extra flexibility, which, in case it needs to be explained, is a positive not a negative.
