I was full force into domains around 5 years ago lasting up until last year. I have taken such a long break, I have nothing to show for all of it.

I would like getting back in the business of buy/sell and developing sites.

The struggle for me is: Starting from a fresh plane, I still have all of my registrar accounts but have only two names now. ( from over 100 )

Not only do I have little to show for on the domain front, I have lost a lot of my developing skills.... iffy on coding and dont know the "hip" new scripts that are being used now and all of that.

Has anyone ever experienced a rebirth in the business like this, anyone have any advice?

I jumped back in last year after several years away. You haven't fallen as far behind as I did, so you should be fine. I was pleased to find that developing has gotten much easier with all of the new tools out there Joomla, Wordpress, XSitePro.

Some negative changes (monetarily speaking) include lower parking revenues, more domain tasting by registrars, and registrars auctioning or dealing in expired domains. This reduces the overall quality of dropping names. People rarely lose a name by accident with the extended renewal, redemption and registrar holding.

There are a lot of decent keyword domains 2-3 worders that appear to be selling inexpensively on the reseller forums. I never followed the trendy stuff like numerics and LLL CCC trends, so I don't worry about that now either.

So, as I build my site/domain portfolio this time around, the margins are a bit lower and I have to be more careful about my purchases to make sure I get quality up front.

My old method of grabbing 100 names from the drop, selling 5% back to original owners at a premium, parking 25% for a profit, selling off a big chunk of linked/traffic names on eBay, the occasional parked sale, and drop the junk - no longer a viable model.

Fortunately, it didn't take me too many crappy names to figure it out :)

My new ROI is about 5% per month compared to more than 10% in days of old, but it sure beats leaving my money in the market or CD's.

Yes, your market timing is good -- welcome back. Rick hit the high points except for the IP lobby abusing URDP process and trying to capture ICANN.

Cheers,

There are some bargains and there are some nutters who are paying crazy money still for domains ! so it a bit hit and miss to be honest depending whether you are buyer or seller.

Haha! I recognise your name- we must have dealt in the past as you randomly facebooked me a couple of weeks ago! Don't know if you remember? It makes sense now!

I can vouch for what others have said, the main changes to the industry from a speculator's point of veiw is that overall prices have come down a little in the reseller market and parking revenue is a disaster. (My parked.com account is at 50% of last year). It is a bad time to sell and a good time to expand your portfolio, so looks like you are in luck!
