I have an OC12 at my provider
A server to handle the DNS calls for the names, one to handle the email and another to handle the sites for regs and joins etc.
Three servers can do the job easily
Down the road it could use more
Bandwidth is bandwidth, I have an OC 12 at my fingers to use
Let's say you have 1M in members
100K use it an average of 3 times a day
the average email is 1000 bits
that's ONLY 9Gig a month with 300K emails going out a day
I process 300K emails a day on ONE mail server with no problem
it takes maybe 6 hours to process that much email, and I think my email server is only 1G processor, so if I upgraded it to 2.5 or whatever servers are today it would be done in what 2 hours
anyway, it does not take hundreds of thousands of dollars to maintain three servers for the project
It would be right around 1K a month my cost
the servers would have to blow out a ton of bandwidth for the 1K to be more
anyway, the joins are automatic
the only work is a low level admin to turn off trouble accounts
I'm sure a creative cgi dude could program a script so when any account gets say 3 emails to abuse it temporarily closes the trouble maker
the only thing that will cost hundreds of thousands is the ad budget to push it
now I have a ton of traffic and if I partner with someone I want them to have tons of traffic
that and a few notices around the net about how you can get a FREE F*CK domain will create instant traffic
eyeballs on the site lets me push them to my high conversion ratio pay sites
I make money the project makes money
1K a month is the real cost to have the hardware and BW to make it go
yes there's a ton of scripting in the beginning to automate it all
yes there's a few headaches down the road
but if you limit the emails out to 30 a day and you keep a watch on the trouble makers with an autobot on the abuse address, it could be an easy major site
