2 months after installing norton360, it let a virus called real-av in and I basically had to wipe the hard-drive and start over.

Can anyone recommend (a store bought) antivirus/malware ?

Thanks :)

I am sure its not a "norton" issue.

Anti virus - ALWAYS running behind the facts, First comes the virus, than the "patch"

I use Kaspersky as well, but I have no idea if NOD32 is better or not. Hopefully both are good enough.. Paid for 2 years on 3 PC's anyway.

is it worth upgrading to the $34 avg Pro version ?

From what I have read no. Also two other free antivirus programs that are solid.

1) Avira AntiVir Personal - takes up less memory than AVG
2) avast! Home Edition - takes up more memory than AVG but some believe has a better record at virus detection than AVG.

Spyware removers that you should consider:
1) Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - I use this one and its pretty good.
2) Trend Micro HijackThis - this is a great little program. It scans the Registry and hard drive for spyware.
3) SpywareBlaster - this is not a scanner at all but a program that Prevents spyware from being installed on your computer in the first place.
4) Ad-Aware 2008 - I use this one as a back up because of problems with freezing up when scanning and update problems. solid though.
5) SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition - Just started using this one it seems pretty solid at detection.

Norton and McFee are for kids. Whenever you get a new computer or laptap, you'll be doing yourself a big favor by UNinstalling it, then buy NOD32 by Eset.

Some members here referred it to me and I'm very pleased with it.

Just for anyone's info, NOD32 is a software in Hong Kong, attached in a wide range of computers as a free gift. So you can make your own decision. Personally, I don't think free software is good enough. But that's just me.

I'm with tekz999 on the Zone Alarm product.

There is a general beta program going on right now so you could try before you buy (it will timeout in something like 50 days). Even in beta it is pretty stable and works as advertised.

Excellent choice -- the best I've used by far.

(just hope they don't ever get bought out by the Russian mob).

Cheers,
