I used to think that IPB was a much better written script, but since they've started charging, PHPBB all the way. PHPBB isnt engineered as well as IPB but it is very easy and friendly to use.
But the best one is ofcourse VBulletin ;)

I agree with the others. The best free forum script is phpBB, but vBulletin
offers many more features and it's more secure. So if you're going to seriously
develop a website which is of importance for you then you should use vB right
from the start. It's definitely worth the money.

Just because it is a paid product now doesn't make it any worse. It actually makes it better in level of support, and new product development.


I never understand why people prefer vBulletin over IPB either. But that's another topic.
