even if they have 29% of the worlds domain market, i would bet that more than 50% of those domains are worthless.

Agreed!

Yes, Bob Parsons did this as a PR stunt. .me is Godaddy's baby. They won some sort of Contract from Montenegro to handle the new extension .me, it used to be .yu .

Well you should follow the news:
Something is up:
ME Domain Names Had World Record Growth in 2008, Report

2009-01-15 14:02:50 - With the startup sales of the DotMe domain extension setting Internet world records, as the fastest ever selling new domain extension, .ME domains certainly seem to be taking the Internet by storm.

Miami, - FL January 15, 2009 - Spherequest - More and more companies are making sure they snap up their brands with the new popular DotMe extension.
Read it all here, remember to skip the add:
http://www.domaininformer.com/news/...WorldRecordGrowthin2008ReportsSphereques.html

.Me is looking more and more as a future goldmine to me
Hard to criticize that kind of numbers and facts in the article.

Want some facts instead of registry released "news" and "facts"? Read the responses to .me from the top domainers - it ain't pretty.

More and more companies are making sure they snap up their brands

Well no shit. It's either that or be forced to go the legal route to get them from squatters. It's cheaper and easier to buy them up front than pursue the legal route. That's not news.

We saw all this with mobi, we saw it all over again with .asia and now .me. It will repeat for every new extension. Self-created hype means nothing to those willing to look past the sales pitch.

You should not follow the news. Every new domain extension released makes the same claim as .me. Buy a .me if you choose but there is nothing new about it, we heard this same story with .mobi and I dropped all but 6 of mine. Same old story, .tel will be the next one or something else but no worries. I'm sure all the .com owners are selling their domains to get a hold of one of these new snazzy top .me domains.

If you look beyond the hype you will see the marketing machines at work. Numbers can be tainted to look good, if you only show the numbers you want to use to fool the consumer.

When I watch football this Sunday, they will say Kurt Warner is the only QB in history to do something, maybe it's scratch his head with his foot but you can bet Fox Sports will have one stat that makes Kurt Warner the best at something.

Agreed. Newbies swallow everything that they read without question.
Not a single day goes by without seing copy-paste articles about the alleged record growth, claims that the TLD is endorsed by so-called top 'domainers', 'pundits', 'experts' etc but none of these parties are identified :)
For some people .me has turned into a cult but of course it's all déjà vu again.

I agree with most part, but let's not forget that the brandability is there. Whether it ends with .it, .no or .me you can find great names: Develop.it, Yes.No, Date.me, and they are very valuable. I don't own any .me's, don't even plan to buy, because all the good ones are long gone, and obviously 99% of the registered names are useless. In the long run .me will be just like any European cctld (okay, not .de or .uk..).

All of us belonging to the .com generation need to understand that .me domains are totally different than all the other new extensions (.mobi, .asia, .tel) as .me take the domain world to a new and more modern level.
.Me will be the second most important extension after .com very soon as not only Godaddy is supporting them but also some very large financial European companies ready to enter the market with millions of Euros (that are much more than worthless US dollars) buying .me domains and developing them into profitable websites.
They will create an unique market and nobody can stop them.
The reason of this is simple, .me are not only domains, they are meaningful words and sentences. Love.com means nothing, Love.me is pure grammar so creating a website on that will reunite people from all over the world. Love.me means something in the US, in Europe, Asia, Africa and everywhere while Love.com, Love.mobi, Love.net etc. mean nothing so in a future global world people will need a global website understandable worldwide.
This is real cyberestate, a value to be shared worldwide.
I am going to invest in .me from now as I wanna be part of the new trend.
.Com will be the king of domains but .Me will rule for a more developed and profitable web made of websites to be shared worldwide.
Regards and good luck to everybody.

Yes, .me is the ccTLD for Montenegro, nothing more. An insignificant country with about half as much potential as .tv. Good luck, but .me is another .ws as far as I'm concerned.

$14.99/year for .me vs. $9.99/year for .com (Current Pricing with no promotional codes). I would try to promote .me as well, just look at the additional revenue and I'm sure the margins aren't shabby either.

False. A lot of premium names have been reserved from the start and are not sold yet: list.

Next auction for premium names will be Jan 19.: Contact.Me, Read.Me, Feed.Me, Alert.Me, Save.Me.

Guys have a look at the bids
Contact.Me, Read.Me, Feed.Me, Alert.Me, Save.Me will receive
at the Next auction for premium names on Jan 19
and then let's re-discuss about .me domains.
We will all be impressed by the attention this extension gets by new investors
with new fresh capital.

Well, .me means Europe and not Montenegro to European companies.
And while actually the US are totally crushed by the financial crisis,
Europe is in a better shape and it the new super-power of the world.
To all the US guys out there, get ready as Europe is gonna take the lead
and .me domains will be our weapon in our hands.

I say crap.
Could you name a few of these "very large financial European companies ready to enter the market with millions of Euros (that are much more than worthless US dollars) buying .me domains" ?
There is no way .me or .whatever is going to beat mature TLDs like .net, .de, .co.uk.

While I agree .me is catchy, it is not as universal as .tv for example. It does not work well in all languages.
The supply of valuable keywords in that extension (or any extension for that matter) is limited and the bulk of it is hoarded by the registry. It is a money-making scheme à la mobi. The only big winner is the registry operator, the registrars and the registrants will be left with a few crumbs of the money pie, or left holding the bag.
