I have an ongoing domain auction and had deliberately chosen to be conservative, bumping it only once during a time period of 35 hours. Yet it was immediately frowned upon and given a gentle nudge by IT_web_team.

What is the true bumping rule on DNF? I read the sticky and it only indicated a no bumping rule for domain sales, not for auctions.

Suggestion: Domain sales and domain auctions are different in nature. The latter should be accorded reasonable and conservative bumping privileges since it is an ongoing event with a closing time.

In that sense, all posts should be allowed some reasonable degree of bumping. Imagine this: users are allowed one domain sale post per 24 hours. If not allowed to bump a previous sale thread, what is to stop them from re-posting the same sale on a new thread 24 hours later? The end product - the forum is free from bumps, but cluttered with numerous repeat sale threads with the same offerings.

If I post adamdicker.com today and it slides to the bottom then the users are telling me they have no interest in this domain. So why on earth would we let the user "bump" it back to the top ahead of new strings that are posted when nobody was interested in it in the first place and probably won't be interested in it after the "bump".

I often miss new threads before they sink to the bottom, not because I'm not interested in the subject matter but because I'm not online at the time or simply overlook the thread first time round.

Once every 24 hours across all advertising threads gets my vote.

How is this fair to new threads that also got posted just because you missed the previous one?

It would be fair because they would also be able to bump their thread 24 hours later.

Not all DNF members are online at the same time e.g. you post a domain for sale at 6pm EST, that's the middle of the night GMT, by the time I wake your thread will most likely be 2-3 pages deep and there's a good chance I'll miss it, unless it's bumped.

Thread Title - Bumping Etiquette: re Domain Auctions vs Sales

First off, the primary contention is that bumping ought to be allowed for Domain Auctions because

(1) It is different in nature from fixed price domain sales
(2) The auctions have to be constantly "kept alive" because they are an ongoing activity with a closing time/date
(3) It is natural for bidders, both revealed and potential ones, to wish for the auction thread to be buried deep - this is unfair for the seller and other potential bidders
(4) No activity on an auction thread does not suggest that a lousy name is being offered
(5) If the auction allows private bids, a post such as "PMs replied", or "Bids received via PM" are pertinent, relevant, necessary and new information

As for fixed price domain sales. For lack of a better analogy, think of newspaper ads. Haven't you seen repeated advertising for products that you find useless? Or even better yet, think of the daily news headlines. Not everybody wants to hear the latest happenings around town, neither does everybody wish to hear the same news over and over again. But repeated news still happen... morning program, lunch program, evening program, late night program all blasting the same news. Why? For the benefit of the others who just switched on the TV.

Back to fixed price domains. Nobody here is asking for "bumping" to be legalized 4, 5 times a day. But once during 24-48 hours ought to be permissable. If no bumping is allowed, one can already think of at least 2 ways to circumvent the rule:

Based on the other rule that new threads offering the same domains should not be posted,
(1) Post a new thread offering either n+1 or n-1 domains for sale
(2) Update the old thread, taking 1% off prices... 2% off prices... $0.10 off prices... offer good for next 1 hour... 2 hours... 24 hours...

Get the picture? What we need is to continue believing that members are able to practise self-constraint and maturity. The last thing we need on such a wonderful forum is for over-zealous moderators to go around zapping the motivation out of members. Unless, of course, that's the forum owner's aim.

Ok here is my opinion as I posted in the mod room a few minutes ago:

This is in discussions in the mod room so nothing is final yet.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Here is my view on bumping then I will explain it.

I believe we should have a NO bumping at all rule and here's why:

If I post adamdicker.com today and it slides to the bottom then the users are telling me they have no interest in this domain. So why on earth would we let the user "bump" it back to the top ahead of new strings that are posted when nobody was interested in it in the first place and probably won't be interested in it after the "bump". To me it's like the user is just getting extra publicity or advertising for a crap name that nobody wants to see in their top 50 strings anyways.

Second, I think we need to put an end also to the ridiculous "Sent PM" posts as well. Who does this benefit?

Only the thread starter as he/she gets more advertising in their thread because it gets "bumped" back to the top for nothing. Does the thread starter need this, no. They get a popup box telling them they get a PM, so to me these are more useless bumps that serve no real purpose.

I for one would rather see new threads at the top of todays' posts than old junk and bumps people had no interest in reading the first time, let alone the second or third.

Feedback welcome.

-=DCG=-

Yeah good idea. Ban bumping all together, as soon as posssible, and at least then we would all be on more of an equal basis.

Do it quickly please, and lets move on.

My 2 cents, the last thing I want to see is the same post at the top every time I log in. Can you imagine is everyday you log in and all the top posts look like this:

http://www.dnforum.com/f5/100-coms-looking-offers___forumxbox-com-123401.html

All it would cause is me to stop coming back.

I often miss new threads before they sink to the bottom, not because I'm not interested in the subject matter but because I'm not online at the time or simply overlook the thread first time round.

If you haven't been on in several days go to the bottom of the screen and there is a button that lets go to page 2 and 3 and so on.

I find gratutious bumping just as annoying as the next person, but I do want to present a different issue here..

Someone mentioned that in the case of auction threads that bidders have good reason to see a thread buried - well, I think it is very much the same thing with fixed price domains.

I don't think I've ever had an offer made *in* a thread I've posted (I'm not referring to a few BIN sales I've had). All of them have come via PM and in several cases, people have actually contacted me via the whois contact info. Many people do not want their offers to be seen publicly.

Perhaps drawing a line between sales threads where there is active interest in a domain versus those simply saying "still available" needs to be done.

Just my two cents.
