On my website, I have added a list of Companies and the
Generic Domains that they have purchased to be redirected to
their current website. Below is a current list of what I have
collected to date. If you can add any domains that would be great.
As I keep track of the weekly domain sales, I would like to keep track of
sales of Generics to End-users. Some of the examples I have listed on my site
are: Insurance.ca TD Bank
CarRental.ca Discount Car and Truck Rental.
If you can add any in this thread, I will add them to my site.
The link is below…thanks again, Ilze :)

to show others the value of a Generic!!

Thanks Everyone. I am particularly looking for generics that are not in the name of the company.
This shows that the End-User values the traffic from an additional source.

I concur with this. It's one thing to go by a brand name, but it's another thing to create a new brand based on a relevant keyword.

Very shrewd idea, Ilze, to showcase the usage of premium domain names to show potential purchasers that it's a common practice nowadays.

A perfect example is wheels.ca, presently in use by the Toronto Star as an auto-related matters portal. They had a perfectly reputable name as "Toronto Star", but they used that name in the news business, not in the cars business.

This is exactly where a premium domain name comes in handy, to create a "sub-brand". Just like Procter and Gamble does with its sub-brands such as Tide. It's a parallel concept, in my opinion.

Here's another one I saw while surfing around tonight...

mustard.ca -- Mrs. McGarrigle's Fine Food Shop

Not exactly a mega corporation, but a small business that "get's it"

Here's a perfect one... Table.ca, which was recently in TBR, now redirects to www.hdthreshing.com, a furniture company.

Ilze, I have a feeling that this is exactly what you were going for re: non-brand name use.

Just memory, from a memorable TBR week :)

Another one I just found by accident is "lineofcredit.ca" - belongs to a financing broker named Joe Malek, redirecting to his site www.joemalek.com.

I'd recommend going through your list of domain sales. Chances are, after someone paid a sum upward of mid $x,xxx for a domain, they did something with it.

Wouldn't you know... with "boots.ca" being at the top of your list, I typed in "boot.ca" by accident, just as a brief test of my own theory, and it turns out the Toronto International Film Festival owns it (???).

Would be interesting to look into the reasoning behind it.

You've got quite a list going there, Ilze. Keep up the good work!

It doesn't forward to the following page, but maybe this is the reasoning for boot.ca?

http://tiff.net/industry/programmes/filmmakerbootcamp

Developed in partnership with Telefilm Canada, Filmmaker Boot Camp gives filmmakers the skills and contacts they need to make the most of their experience at the 37th Toronto International Film Festival.
Filmmaker Boot Camp is open to Canadian filmmakers who are attending the Festival for the first-time with their feature or short films in Official Selection.

Although boot.ca forwards to http://tofilmfest.ca/films/ , i can't find a film called "boot", so if not for the bootcamp I have no idea why they own boot.ca

Edit: Ilze, if you only want names in this thread and no discussions, let me know and I'll delete this post

www.Cheese.ca

Balderson Cheese Company

I think cheese is brilliant for branding, big time, as it imply,s smile and say cheese, for photos of course. Genius! Not to mention the generic use as well.
