China's Leading Search Engine Baidu Hacked...
China's leading search engine Baidu has been hacked by the Iranian Cyber Army - the same group responsible for last month's attack on Twitter.
Baidu issued a press statement explaining: "This morning, Baidu's domain name registration in the United States was tampered with, leading to inaccessibility."
The hackers attacked the homepage of Baidu.com by 'poisoning' the server's domain name system (DNS) with a rogue address, which presented users with a page created by the Iranian Cyber Army. The page featured an image of the Iranian flag and, according to a user comment on The Next Web, the Persian text stated: "Iranian Cyber Army has been established to fight back against Zionist and pro-democracy websites."
While the group's previous attack on Twitter was believed to be due to the role played by the microblogging site in June's Iranian student protests, it is unclear why the group targeted Baidu, but sources are suggesting that it could be related to Iran's nuclear ambitions. Reuters reports that China and Iran enjoy a relatively good relationship based on trading energy and the sale of fuel from Chinese state companies to Iran, and the Iranian Cyber Army is not believed to be involved with the nation's government.
Baidu outranks Google significantly in China and is the nation's most popular search engine, enjoying more than 60 per cent of the market share. The attack took down the site for at least four hours, but it is now functioning again. SOURCE
