Hi , I got 3 questions:

1) better chinese simplified or traditional ?

2) best free source for translations starting from English?

3) how many results with Google of the translated name ( I mean already in Chinese charathers) would be a YES to register it for you IDN-experts ?

Many thanks

1) Simplified (PRC)

2)http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php
http://www.systranet.com

3) 10 Million, but Google is not the be and end all. Unfortunately, in Simplified Chinese there is not much to go on. Taiwan has Overture Searches and Bids. PRC struggling but Adwords are highly indicative!

thanks again for your help Dave, it`s very appreciated.
Would you register under the ccTLD .CN premium words over 10 million results if .com and .net were taken ?

Dot CN are expensive to register and renew, as a dot JP. I my view these won't perform as well as dot coms, but they might be worth a punt. Certainly better than dot TV. If the dot net is registered at least one other person thinks the term is very good.

Although the initial reaction of many is to go directly to the primary markets, it might be worth having a look at what others are selling as this may look very cheap this time next year. When IE 7.0 comes out and the domains start to get serious traffic then a lot of heavy weight investors will start to move in.

1) Simplified (PRC)[/QUOTE

Now I'm curious as to why simplified over traditonal? Who uses what? Is there any time where traditional might be a better shot like for a certain industry or something?
Thanks

Simplified is PRC and Singapore I believe.

Traditional is Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and the Chinese Expatriat communities in the West.

It is likely that the terms that work well in Simplified will gradually be adopted throughout, as Chinese is very fast evolving language. Those that don't work as well as the Traditonal Ones may well get dropped eventually. Chinese government is taking a much more laissez faire approach these days.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if some Chinese Cities didn't revert to their Traditional Forms at some point in the future, but that is pure speculation.

These issues have been discussed at length many times at IDNForums, however, in brief:

chinesecharacter.com 1
pinyin.com 105
chinesecharacter.com.cn 104
pinyin.com.cn 1006
chinesecharacter.cn 2
pinyin.cn 106
chinesecharacter.net 3

Simplified or Traditional will depend on the term and context. For Taiwanese cities, traditional chinese will be preferred since Taiwan uses traditional chinese. Many technical and everyday terms are also different in Taiwan.

Those numbers are rankings, I have put a hundred and thousand in front of some to emphasize the chasism I see between these term. In other words dot com is top, followed by dot cn for Hanzi characters. I wouldn't give you 2 cents for pinyin or .co.cn!

Well generally speaking you cannot. If the characters map then the corresponding characters are blocked. Much of the time Simplified and Traditional are the same anyway.

If you are trying to target the market of 1.3 Billion, trust me Simplified is the one you are going to need more than 99% of the time. If you want to target Taiwan then Traditional is good also.

I have bought pairs of domains to run comparisons. Dot com seems to win hands down!

I tried systranet since the first link is a dictionary, I don`t see the translator.
Well, with systrant just an example of how this is driving me crazy:

translate the word
match
in simplified chinese and get this:
比賽

I tried to translate it back in English and I got this:
Compared to □

Am I stupid or there is something wrong?
Thanks

You translated into to Simplified, but attempted to translate back from Traditional. You get back to "Competition" if you do it properly.
