I have been using it for the last 5 days and at least for me there is no going back.
The feature I like the most is the domain bar. I have not misspelled one of my favourite website since I have been using it. Gmail now is simply gm google is go dnforum is dn etc...
even if I write almost the full domain like google.co it will redirect automatically to google.com. Once all of the browser will adapt I think the extension will lose A LOT of value and SEO will be a lot more important.
.com .net .info etc... will be a thing of the past. Extension did not make sense from the beginning and this is simply a logical next step.
I think that this is actually a well planned move from google. It will get rid of the misspell all together and while google will eventually lose on domain parking it will make tons of money more from searches without having to share it with us. I think it was all well planned. It will push users more and more towards the ultimate goal to pass through search engines before going anywhere on the internet. You only need firefox and IE to follow step and the industry will be wiped out within 12 months.

Focus the price of generic .com might actually increase because of SEO.
But think, if IE and FF implement this as well people will get used to it. If my GF is doing it for facebook.com and she told me ohh look I dont even have to type all of the URL. That is disturbing. It is obvious they have all of the interest in getting user to go first through them. They will get 100% of the revenue.

Youtube costs Google $1 million per day with minimal revenue, excluding any ongoing and future litigation costs. All the apps that Google developed have lost money. Chrome 0.2 beta is technically an alpha release. They released it to have a footprint against Microsoft but to be of any threat they'd have to enforce its download via another widely used application and that's not going to happen. Firefox has less than 20% of the browser market despite aggressive marketing, while Microsoft has not even blinked at this loss. Most users get the browser with Windows XP/Vista and never change to anything else. There are better, solid browsers out there, such as Opera and Safari. The release of Chrome is a non-event.

it will take 10+ years for this to matter to the average web user. you forget that most web users are not tech savvy. that is why there is so much money to be made with type-in traffic. lots of people don't even use search engines!

you think 1,000,000,000 chinese people who will all use the internet for the first time in the next ten years are going to have any idea what chrome or firefox is? or how to use any of the fancy widgets that ie will steal from them? the answer is no.

1 - Google will have the download on its landing page

2 - The omnibox allows Google to collect "intent" from users to figure out what is in demand, which will lead to more directory-led results.

3 - If Google wanted to place a link for Chrome in its adsense listings, things would get even more interesting.

4 - Never assume uptake rates for software; once you get over a specific population in the wild, it goes exponentially.

So .. If you type in 'fb' you are directed to facebook.com right? What if you wanted to go to fb.com ? They use the exact same system as FireFox 3 uses. If you have already visited dnforum.com in the past and you type in 'dn', you will automatically be prompted with dnforum.com.

This is another zzzZzZZZzz feature and I'm so tired of all the panic threads that people make every time something new is announced...

PANIC!!! SAY GOODBYE TO .COM!! YOU ARE ALL RUINED!!!! .... :asleep:

Yeah most people do not care at all if their browser is IE FF Opera or whatever , they just need something just to browse and pre-installed IE is perfect for most of them

They said the same thing about Altavista remember? It was THE search engine...
Once IE will have the same function we will see...
You need to type in only the first or the first and second letter to go to the website you visit the most.

Agree.
Nothing will change only a minimum loss for some typos.

This Chrome don't kill the .com.
The .com will kill this Chrome.

Don't most browsers have this feature? Do you mean the browser goes to the website without any action by user? That could lead to some interesting situations. You wouldn't want someone to type in po... on your browser and instantly go to your favorite porn site. lol

That is absurd Theo. You must be joking :?: The release of Chrome is one of the most significant events ever, with major negative impact on Microsoft.

Don't you think G is in the process of talking to places like Dell and Gateway to offer both IE and Chrome so buyers can decide between them? In addition, many people will use it even without that what with the clout behind it such as I see Chrome promoted every time you log in to Gmail.

it will be the same as with any other new tool or technology. you will have the early adopters who will use it if for no other reason than that it is the latest thing. now generally in order for it to gain real traction in the marketplace it has to go over well with that crowd otherwise it doesnt get picked up by average joe. its not all about the amount of promotion. or at least, you dont promote to average joe at first, theres no point.

This is probably the 10th post from this guy saying domain names will be obsolete.

My firefox does not have this option it has the option of writing the first 2 letters and to scroll down to choose the site and push enter. How do you turn on the Chrome feature I would be totally interested.

nothing about the domains going obsolete, but I wouldn't write chrome off. Don't forget that placing a simple link for downloading Chrome on Google's search pages will lead to very very high visibility. That alone will get a few million downloads. After that, its the quality of the software that matters, of course.

Personally, I feel uncomfortable using anything other than Firefox, and I can see that there are many people who feel the same way about IE. In many ways, a piece of software can be like smoking - it becomes habit easily. There might be better browsers out there than Firefox, but I've just grown used to it too much.
