On Icann in Luxembourg I talked to some guys that want to setup a CityTLD .berlin (german capitol).
I will interview them in the next days a bit more. what do you think about it?
let me know!

How would they decide what Citys to make a City TLD? There are thousands if not millions, and what about ones from different countrys,or areas which citys have the same name, how would that work? For Example there is a ST Petersburg in Florida in the US and In Russia. Two very different places. No offence but sounds like a bad idea to me.

I think they should wait and let other TLDs get more popular before adding more .crap TLDs like .md .ws .mp .mobi .whoreally .caresandwillnotgettypeintraffic

Thought you said whore ally till I read the next one.

lol might as well make that one next. I thought .sex would sell better than .xxx

But hey we just buy these names, who really cares what we think.

Yeah, but isn't half the point of .xxx to keep minors away? xxx sounds less harmless than sex, IMHO.

Not all adult material depicts sex. Maybe this is why they chose .xxx

last time I looked sex is in the dictionary and xxx is in the porn stores. So whish do you think is more app.. for this.
xxx is in no way less harmless than sex.

I do not really think it is our place or Icann's place to keep kids out of the sex related domain sites. It might be the responsibility of the kids parents.

Most kids past the age of 7 now days know what sex is, they do not know what xxx means. so a kid sees teens.xxx or teens.sex which do you think they are more likely to type in when they know sex is bad, but xxx does not relate to them.

From my encounters with problems of kids seeing porn, either they are to young to know what they are seeing, or old enough they are looking for it. (mostly in younger males)

I own a local computer company and have parents asking me about this kind of stuff all the time.

It is a sponsored TLD.
every one that puts 2.000.000 on the table has the possibility to get an TLD.

The whole point of DNS is add structure for the user. For structure to work there needs to be consistency throughout. Whats the point of having little islands dotted all over the place?

Take .museum
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=museum&meta=
Not 1 .museum in the first 100 results (I only checked the first 100)

Who realistically is going register .jobs? apart from a few HR companies?
ibm.jobs? have to pay, have to setup, have to remember to renew - ibm.com/jobs is a whole lot less hassle.

littlecompany.jobs? Sure that will be popular

If you create more than a handful of carefully selected gTLDs all that will happen is you will push everybody further to .com as the only tld worth having.

I think this is a good news for my domain berlins.net!!!!

dubai has applied for their city tld long time ago .Dubai application

not sure if they would accept it though and cities can always have example.cityname.xx say bashar.newyork.us IMO

conspiracy mode on:

I think the whole new tlds thingy is a scheme from verisign. They probably are behind those people that are behind the new applications for new tlds.
as more and more people get confused, they go back to com/net...

conspiracy mode off

city tld's would bring even more chaos to the inetrnet. theres enough tld's out to satisfy everyone (especially with the ones soon to be released) so why do we need more?

sounds like a bad idea to me. City names are often repeated, so I propose using zipcodes instead lol

hmmm...better go reg some 5 numbers on myself...hehe

just got a mail from them.
they want already to be online in 2007!
As I understood there are more commercial reason for berlin in the forderground.
they do not expect to register so much in the first years. will be less then 200.000

Absolutely true. The field is becoming confused and diluted, not more logical and intuitive. The introduction of all these varied extensions is mainly driven by a handful profiting at the expense of internet simplicity and reliability. The right of the dot is becoming indistinguishable from the left of the dot. We do not have enough intelligent internet governance, imo, and consequently the tld's are getting ridiculous.

its not that they are crap so much but that they are mismanaged and/or overpriced. .md/ws and the rest are country codes so you can thank jon postel for those. they've been there forever. btw: you can get a FREE .tk

I'm against new domains, in fact I think we need to remove all existing country TLD's and make some contenental TLD. I mean common, theres like 50 ccTLD for countries inn Africa, how many domains total are registered for all ccTLD for african countried combined. I'll stake my life on less then a million, common, is it really worth it. www.yahoo.af (africa) is better then having 50 yahoo's for 50 countries. IMHO
