One hundred years ago today (11 April 1912) a vessel embarked 123 passengers at the picturesque seaport town of Cobh, Co. Cork, Ireland.
This was the last port of call before heading westbound across the Atlantic Ocean. Four days later the vessel sailed into the history books becoming one of the most well known ships of all time.
That ship was the TITANIC.
The ship was on her maiden voyage between Southampton and New York with 2,200 passengers and crew on board when she hit an iceberg some 375 miles south of Newfoundland
Sadly on 15 April 1912, only 710 people survived the sinking and the freezing ocean.
One of the main reasons for the huge loss of life was the lack of sufficient lifeboats on board with capacity to carry the full complement of passengers and crew.
On the positive side, the consequence of the tragedy was the establishment in 1914 of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), which still governs maritime safety today.
Cobh is located in Cork Harbour - the second largest natural harbour in the world.
Cobh is the Cruise Port that is the gateway to the city of Cork. Over 50 cruise vessels are expected to visit Cobh this year.
