although I might place a modest value on a .net, .org, .info, or .us tld, I am generally only looking for .com, and am only willing to pay a real premium for .com domains

Why would a well marketed business.cn (business with or in china) be any less valuable than business.com (business in general and nobody knows more about what it is)?

And last question:
Why is .info coming strong and some believe it will have a great future soon? It's 1 character longer than .com, even 2 longer than .us, it (in my humble newbie-opinion) looks clumsy and does not convey business in any way (in that it is much like the dreaded .org). So why would .info be the choice of the future?
Is there any reason behind the market preferences?

1. I believe .com.cn is shit, but .cn is worth waiting for to try to cream the best names when it launches. What's reg fee to you anyway. Don't forget that all extensions are shit if you don't get good names to the left of the dot. .CN could prove to be a valuable address for some businesses, just like .US could prove to be.

2. .INFO is a perfectly understandable abbreviation of INFORMATION and a good if for subject matter in which information search is in strong demand. Not everything on the internet has to be business-to-bed.

You forgot .BIZ :D

Not everyone wants to "convey business in any way". If you're doing Internet activity for personal, noncommercial motives, an address that implies that you're just in it for the money (like .com or .biz or .com.{country-code} or .co.{country-code}) might be the last thing you want. .org is better for this purpose, but still implies that you're an organization. .info, then, is ideal for things like fan and protest sites run by individuals, noncommercially, with no organization behind them.

That's what worries most domain resellers, dto. With poor commercial value, the name can't fetch a good price. But then again, there are many ways to skin an individual's need for information. It's all in the business model :embarrass

In case my question got lost in the long post,
why do you think .info is so popular? And what about .us ?

Have a great weekend!

.INFO is "popular" in Europe because it is a naturally understood word. .COM is not.

It is also popular because it is a highly intuitive address and can even add a sense of authoritativeness to the site name. For example, http://www.spain.info seems more "genuine" than http://www.spain.com

.US is "popular" because it represents all that is great about the States.

Only time will tell how resale values go, but these extensions, unlike wannabe .tv, .cc, .bz, are the real thing, and not artificially forced into meanings that they were not originally intended for.

thanks garyted51. Interesting how high you value the .biz (for self-development of course).

I found this article that may provide good insight on .cc .tv .ws

http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/people/edelman/open-cctlds/

The article noted that many COM registrants failed to buy the corresponding .CC, .TV, and/or .WS domains, and COM registrants may think, few Internet users intensively use or default to ccTLDs, making pursuit of ccTLDs a poor use of scarce resources.

Obviously I asked an interesting question. My thread has had almost 300 visitors in 2 days. Now how do I make that into a website ? :)

But seriously, thank you all for the great input. I believe it shows where the market is and you have all helped me greatly.

Now, will we make it to 300 visitors? :)
See you all!
