For those of you that tried the Cool Tool for appraising domain names, you might find the results from Saturday's auction VERY interesting.

A week prior to the Auction, I ran the list of domain names slated for auction thru the Cool Tool (just for grins ;)). I then compared Saturdays results to my expected results. All in all, the tool held up quite well. The total difference of those 54 domains compared was $360. Pretty good when you consider the total selling price of those domains was $2,275. Additionally, the tool was right 90% of the time when a domain would be skipped in the auction (due to opening bids far above wholesale value).

The big Winners (< $5 difference):

edomains.net
TreatingHairLoss.com
NXT.ORG
Webana.com
Energized.org
Begun.net
phpManuals.com
Tlds.org
nm5.com
iFaculty.com
BookKiosk.com
MVPBaseball.com

The big Losers (> +- $100 difference) :

SupremeNames.Com
dependant.com
car-review.com
87.org

I think these high variances are mainly due to the competitive nature of a live auction driving the price into the retail domain.

I've attached the results spreadsheet for your review.

Lemme know whatcha think.

Enjoy!

Thanks! Hey i'll take ALL feedback, both positive and negative.

I'm thinking about a little .Net project where I make this a free service on the Web.

So your feedback and thoughts are important to me.

Thanks again!

As I mentioned in a PM to you, the Cool Tool seems to return strange (undervalued) results on very short .org domain names. YMMV

Thanks for the vote of confidense CoolHost, your opinion means a lot to me!

As for the Cool Million, I'm not planning to profit on the Tool. Just giving others a resonable baseline for valuation and receiving thanks in return is payment enough. Hence, I want to introduce it as a free web service.

Cheers!

I'm finding that the market is a little unpredictable for 2 char .orgs. I'll be watchin' and learnin' tho. When better market data is available, I'll make adjustments to the model.

Sure thing! And, I'm serious ... thinking easy, accurate, free, "automated" appraisals here. Then, sell banner space, ads! You know. I just think you might be on to something here, beyond just assisting the membership (which is GREAT, too)! Thanks. :)
Good Luck.

Mindful ... just a note to say that its a great tool.

Certainly, we can't expect the tool to be 100% accurate ... still its a great gauage of the value of domains that has been regged.

Thanks again ...

PS - Keep me update should there be improvements on the tool or if you and CoolHost get a site running ... Wouldn't want to miss it for the worlds ... Cheers ..

With ALL due repect... I WROTE IT... IT'S MY INTELECTUAL PROPERTY, LOCK, STOCK, AND BARREL... It came out of my head last month, so unless you developed some portal to my brain (read: Being John Malkovich) and a Time Machine, all credit goes to ME!!! (It's all about me, me, me isn't it - lord I sound like AIS-CEO, M0ney, or one or his other many guises)...

So, use it, enjoy it, but at the end of the day, KNOW I wrote it.

Peace Out!!!

BTW... Congrats Mudfence, you're the first dnf user to earn a place on my ignore list. You will stay there until I receive an apology.

Mindful, it is an interesting tool, however not for serious valuation.
I think your algorithm should put more emphasize on popularity, like multiplying by zero if no results at all.
E.g. tygffdsa.com is valued at $1050/$788/$236.

Put some more work on this and it can become a standard for quick evaluation.

Might need to do some recalculations. I thought there were 83 sales totaling $2,848.00. Did you leave any out of the test?

Good catch! I did the original set of valuations based on the list posted 10 days prior to the actual auction. I wanted to come back and update the values, but life got in the way. (I hate when that happens;)) Hence, the lower figures.

For garbage domains like the example given, you should use a Market Rating of 0. That should place the domain in the appropriate valuation.

I need to update the instructions to match this advice.

Again, the tool is to be used strictly as a guide... too many variables come into play to say it's definitive. Remember, an appraisal is just an opinion.

Thanks.
