DBS , the company that owns fabulous, had their annual general meeting today at the polo club in Brisbane Australia
From the Chairmans address :

The company owned 110,000 unique internet domain names in June 2004, being the 2nd largest portfolio in the world
Today , as a result of recent opportunity to purchase a number of high quality names, the company owns 210,000 domain names

The latest report from Fab's parent company(DBS) to the Australian stock exchange reveals fab are registering 20,000 to 30,000 names per month at a cost of $6 each
They are considering increasing the number registered per month
At 31 dec 2004 they owned 260,000 domain names

If you check their accounts, you will probably get a good idea what they paid. Go to the Australian Stock Exchange site (ASX) & plug in the company code DBS. What is certain is that they did not do a Marchex deal to get that additional 100,000 names, otherwise we would have all heard about it. If they got good domains at value prices - good for them, I just wish it had been me!

What type of .COM? Going on this kind of roll at at a namespace saturation of 33,000,000, they must be registering names like zyetp11-travel.com to just claim those numbers. Or am I missing something here.

Is it only domains that THEY own, or does it include domains they have for their clients ? Fabulous is also a registrar ...

I once heard that all domain names were unique.

I think the guy tried to explain to me that there would only ever be one "sex.com" or something ;-)

Mole, the answers are not likely to come out until DBS release their next set of accounts at the Australian year end, 30th June. We will then be able to see what impact, in terms of revenue, that 100,000 names has produced. That will give a idea as the the nature of the names they bought.

Whatever the situation, they hold over 200,000 names. If even half of those have decent traffic, in theory they should affect the market value of the company, but it may be that the Australian stock market may not be sophisticated enough to understand what they do and the impact of the Marchex deal. Now if Fab were US listed, that would be different.

Good to see an Australian company doing well in the digital age. Hats of too em, and when i get enough domains with decent traffic ill be sure to give there PPC a go...
