The National Criminal Intelligence Service (NCIS) urged people to be vigilant when making donations.
It says fraudsters are sending emails trying to gather personal or financial information to cash in on inheritance funds, asking for money to be placed in banks overseas and offering to locate loved ones.
The service also says false websites have been set up in the guise of legitimate relief organisations, one of which can affect computers with a virus if accessed.
A spokesman said: ââ¬ÅWe do not in any way wish to dissuade members of the public from donating money to the registered charity Tsunami appeals.
ââ¬ÅBut we urge them to exercise vigilance in order to prevent and disrupt these and other possible criminal scams.ââ¬Â

GoldenPalace.com is presently maintaining a non-profit Web site, www.tsunamirelief.com that hosts links to a series of popular organizations dedicated to gathering donations to help those in this time of need. Each of these links goes directly to a specific charity: there is no middleman handling any of the donations.
The site was recently purchased through a $10,000 donation to victims of the tsunami disaster; it is expected that many more donations will result from this initial contribution.
GoldenPalace.com has started the ball rolling; we are now offering you the opportunity to help raise funds for this very worthy cause. In this mailer you will find the tools you need to spread the world about www.tsunamirelief.com. Please do what you can.

dtobias said:Scams purporting to be seeking tsunami donations but actually going to the personal profit of the scammer can reasonably and logically use .com addresses, because their fraudulent activity is commercial in nature. Such sites don't belong in my "Domain Hall of Shame".
Legitimate sites seeking charitable donations for tsunami relief, however, do belong in my "Hall of Shame" if they improperly use .com addresses implying commerciality.
This makes a certain twisted logical sense in my own head, at least...
